In my opinion, yes-if you keep it close to its original form- short and light weight. QC wise it is basically the same as any other quality AR. S&W makes a good product. For SHTF, reliability and the ability to stay functional are key. I've had no jams, even with lower priced ammo. Accuracy is very good.

Some have criticized the lack of FA and dustcover. However, many combat weapons do not have a dustcover, just a closed bolt. In the event a round won't seat, I'd just recharge. But, I haven't had any of those problems--just bangs.

GTG.

The MP15 is an excellent carbine, just get the right ammo for the occasion. Don't use varmint rounds as they fall short of penetration before fragmenting on BGs.

Don't worry be happy.Go buy the sport. I only have four guns and the sport by far is the guns I enjoy most.

Ah, your first AR.... I remember the day I got my first AR and I swore if I kept it alone there's no way it could multiply....

Now I have 5 :o

I had to buy a Sport because who can pass up a deal like that??? The only downside I see is the 1/9 barrel twist, but if you stick with light bullets no problem for long shots. I also prefer the FA and dust cover but did you see the price of the Sport??? :p

I would have no problem trusting my life with the Sport.

I have owned numerous AR uppers and I really don't think 1:9 is a bad thing, at all. I've never once shot any ammo over 64gr and my sport will outshoot my 1:7 spikes tactical rifles all day long.

If you're building a long range precision gun and shooting 77gr match ammo 1:8 or 1:7 may be superior but in all other cases I prefer a 1:9.

The Sport is not just a good choice, it's an awesome choice! They're great right out of the box, but beware, they multiply and start begging to be spiffed up.

Good Luck and good shooting. :D

I don't own one, (the AR bug bit me before it was introduced); that being said, there's nothing wrong w/the Sport. If they had existed when I decided I needed an AR, I would more than likely have one. I will leave you with the advice I used to give when I worked at the LGS: in re AR's, if somebody builds exactly what you want, buy it! If the first thing you're going to do is switch the buttstock, pistol grip, sights, etc.; you're better off building your own. I bought one, (M&P 15 MOE), and built two, (both on S&W receivers).

The Sport is the AR I have decided to go with..At first it was only price as I am a Veteran and with the LE discount it is really atractive. After looking more into the gun I found it has a great reputation regardless of price. I do think you should get what you want from the start. In my case I do want to end up with a 20" barrel but for now the 16" will be okay till I become familiar with the platform.

I wasn't thinking SHTF when I bought mine, but after using it I would have no qualms trusting it in that situation. I have bought 3 semi-auto firearms in the last couple of years (2 pistols, 1 rifle). The pistols - to differing degrees - have had various levels of FTE. The Browning Buckmark much moreso than the Browning Hi Power.

I've put roughly 1,200 rounds through the Sport. I have had - literally - not 1 FTE. Every single trigger pull and resulting eject has been perfect. And I'm using the word "literaly" as it's supposed to be used. Not figuratively perfect - I mean literally - every round - no issues.

My sport

I have four other firearms and out of the 5 total I really enjoy a day at the range with my M&P 15 sport rifle. I have like 10 mags for it and it is covered with Magpul furniture. I have not have any issues with it except during the break in and a few operator error issues. This was my first AR15 style rifle and I have learned a lot on the design of the rifle, I would like someday when I get the cash to build my own.

I bought my 15 Sport last Friday and took it to the range for the first time today. After roughly 15 rounds, she was zeroed in. As was true for the remaining 75 rounds or so.

So far, no complaints. Going to fire her stock 2-3 more times then start tinkering around with optics, triggers, etc. In love with it thus far.

I strongly recommend picking it up. I got mine for $690 after tax but had a heck of a time tracking one down in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. They're going fast!

I'm surprised you didn't buy one from Grabagun in Coppell - they have the Sport for $559 - that's $605 out the door if you pick it up at their store.

I paid $679 for my MP15 at my local range and I don't feel bad about it. :)

I look at it this way. If the gun shoots reliably, it'll work no matter what. And if the shtf I'm not going to worry about a dust cover or forward assist. AND, I doubt whoever I'm shooting at will either. I think the Sport is really a fantastic gun for the price. I sure love mine.
PS. I've been using that ZQI 5.56 ammo that wally world is selling for under $10 for a box of 30. Seems to work very well for a cheap burn it up ammo.

One more thing, buying the Sport let me hang around this part of the forums and even feel like I belong here.
