I have the Optics Ready M&P15, and I do not like the railed gas block at all. I initially wanted to add a longer free float rail, but I will never have a scope on this gun and I don't plan on doing any distance shooting. Mostly plinking at 25-50yds and home defense duties. I have pretty much ruled out the ff rail.

I decided on the Magpul MOE handguard. I got it installed, and now the front sight doesn't fit on the gas block. The handguard doesn't give it enough clearance.

Can someone please throw me some ideas? I just want a good set of iron sights (preferably flip for use with a red dot), and a nice handguard.

I can still use a red dot with the fixed A2 sight, correct?

Yes. You will see the front sight in the sight picture with the red dot, but it does not interfere with the use of the dot. Keep both eyes open and focus down range on the target.

Which front sight are you using that does not fit? I have used Magpul Folding Polymer, Troy Folding Battlesight, and currently the Magpul Pro front sight and all fit fine with a standard Carbine Length MOE handguard.

I tried the Magpul MBUS last night and it wouldn't close all the way. The top of the MOE hand guard was keeping it from laying down. Weird.

Hmm... let me double check on mine. I could have sworn it worked without issue. Perhaps I am mis-remembering :).

I know for sure the Troy and Magpul Pro work fine. More expensive than the polymer, but I am very high on the Pro. Smaller, lower profile, no tool adjustment. Very solid.

EDIT - sorry, I did mis-remember. First of all, you don't want to put the polymer MBUS on a gas block, as it can/will get hot and deform the polymer. I was thinking of my other rifle which has a railed handguard.

But, I now recall for the Troy sights I did have to shave a couple thousands (more info here - http://smith-wessonforum.com/smith-...-flat-dark-earth-ar-builds.html#post137798042) off the ridge running across the front of the MOE to allow the Troy folder to fold completely down without contact.

So, you can go with the Magpul Pro which requires no modifications (which I highly reccomend), or you could sand a bit off the ridge and use the Troy or similar (Diamond, MI, etc). There may be other sights that work as well. Check out the M&P-15 picture thread, there is bound to be plenty of MOE stocks with front sights

Here is mine, didn't have problem with front sight and I used a 45deg offset to mount laser.

Thanks for the replies guys. I ordered the MBUS Pro. I'm gonna see if those work.

Yeah, that's a different handguard than the OP has. The MOE has a slight ridge at the front, which can prevent some folding sights from laying completely flat.

Is that the MBUS Pro in the pic?

No issues - I love the Pro's. The are low profile, lower than the Troy's. They are also more compact in size in general. They are metal, require no tools to adjust, and flip up and down with a very solid detent, but will fold down if impacted, unlike the Troy's which lock up in place.

Don't get me wrong, the Troy's are good sights. I actually tried a set for a few days but went right back to the Pro's. I don't like that they lock in the up position, although some people do prefer that. They are also bulkier than the Pro's. They also default to the large aperture on the rear sight, which I thought I would like but in reality I did not. Regardless they are probably the most popular aftermarket metal sight out there and have a very large market share - I just prefer the Pro's, and I think they will become more popular with time - they've only been out for a few months, maybe half a year or so I think.

Good writeup. Appreciate the info. Guess I'll go ahead and order the rear sight as well.

Good plan :) I believe you will be very pleased with the set. I also help convert Gunny4053 over to the Pro's as well :D

Plus 1 on the Magpul Pros. As 78Staff stated, they are solid, easily adjusted without tools, and accurate metal sights. You'll be very happy with your choice.

Good Luck and good shooting. :D

Well here is the front MBUS Pro. I love it! I actually like the rear sight that's on it (from my M&P15-22), but I'll get the rear MBUS Pro when I get another optic. This is exactly what I was looking for. Thanks for all the suggestions.
