I've seen threads comparing the M&Ps to Glocks, so let's do it here with a Ruger.

I've been shopping for a semi-auto handgun. I want something that will work for carry, something chambered in 9mm, and something with one of those super scary magazines that holds (*GASP*) more than 10 rounds! (Who needs more than 10 rounds to kill a deer in a Self-Defense situation? LOL)

I thought Glock was the way to go... then read here, and said... wow maybe I should consider an M&P9. Then my LGS (who was out of stock anyway) suggested Ruger.

What do you think?

I've heard good things about the Ruger SR9. I don't like the chamber loaded flag that pops up on top of the slide, but I DO like the magazine disconnect on it and the manual safety. Still, I would go with the M&P Compact if you intend to carry or the full size M&P if you don't. They can be had with a manual safety, with a mag disconnect (but not both in one gun), or without either.

I have both a M&P9c and SR9c. They are both great guns but I give the nod to M&P9c. It doesn't have either a manual safety or mag safety. The SR9c has both which I don't care for. The M&P9c also has better ergonomics making it feel better in the hand than the SR9c. The M&P also holds two more rounds in the same size package.

The one thing the SR9c excels at is the trigger. That trigger is really sweet. Very little takeup and has a distinct reset. With that said, I can live with the trigger on the M&P and prefer it as a carry gun over the SR9c for the reasons stated above. Once S&W transitions to the Shield trigger in the rest of the M&P line, it will make it even better.

I also have both pistols. I feel well armed with either, but tend to like the M&P better. My daughter will only carry a SR9c. The fit and finish of the M&P seem more robust. I shoot both equally well, and have had zero malfunctions with both pistols, having shot close to 500 rounds in both pistols. Concerning the Glocks... When I purchased my first M&P, I sold my Glocks and have no intention to ever buy another one. Great pistols, but the M&P is just a step above in MHO.
