I would like to add a manual safety to my M&Pc 9mm I have the older model without the notched frame but I could notch it out myself what I want to know from knowledgeable gun smiths is what internal part's I would need to do this. I shoot the pistol very well and would like to EDC it (I perfer manual safety's for my EDC) I'am not interested in buying something else I want to use this one.
Thanks for the HELP as always

This is the response from S&W in regards to adding a thumb safety to a S&W 45.

Unfortunately it is not possible to retrofit a thumb safety on an existing gun. *It can only be installed during the initial manufacturing process.

You may wish to call S&W just to confirm.

MORE ON THIS: (THIS IS FROM ANOTHER FORUM)....

Mr. Valenze,

First of all thank you for responding to my email in a timely matter. Second, I would appreciate it if you could elaborate on your answer. Because, from the M&P forums I have read it's not a matter if you can. It seems to be a matter of won't. From my understanding since my M&P already has the cutouts on the frame all I need Is the the thumb safety, spring, and one other piece that will fit into my existing sear block... Am I missing some technical reason or is it a policy/legal reason?

Hello,

The thumb safety can only be installed on the gun during the initial manufacturing process for legal reasons. *The configuration of the pistol is linked to the serial number which is on file with the BATF. *We are not allowed to change that configuration or sell the parts that would let someone else modify the pistol.

I call BS on this.

Its well know you can REMOVE the thumb safety on M&Ps and Smith will sell you a plug so why the heck can you not put one on it?

I think the real reason is they don't want Bubba's to do garage gun smithing and then sue them.

I expect the plug is the same one used to close up the keyhole for the integral lock. Those plugs are/were used on LE order handguns and guns ordered without the lock and are/were available for sale as replacement parts. Even if it's a different plug, it's still sold as a replacement part for those firearms sold without the manual safety.

As stated, S&W isn't going to sell any safety related parts outside the factory/certified armorer system to shield themselves from liability. It might also be linked to their ability to sell firearms in certain markets. In either case, you can hardly blame them. They're not going to flush the business over a few folks who decided they want to monkey with their firearms. If your piece is broken, use the lifetime warranty.

I believe the OP has two basic choices: sell or trade for a gun with a factory manual safety or learn to live without one. OP, you might want to fondle an example or two with the safety to see if it meets your expectations before making up your mind. Or butchering your current gun.
