I have one of the old M281 adapters for M16/AR15. This is the one that allows you to shoot 22LR in the M16 or in my case, AR15. Does anyone know if there is an aftermarket magazine that will work with this setup? I have the TM and it shows an adapter for the M16 magazine but I don't have that adapter. Any info will be greatly appreciated as I would like to put this to good use.

Gun Parts Corp/Numrich shows they have the M261 magazines. These are the 10 round .22 caliber magazines that you insert in a regular M16/AR-15 5.56 magazine.

Can someone educate me on what a M281 is?
I use a CMMG Bravo .22LR Conversion in my AR, so I know how that works, but I'm unfamiliar with a M281

I believe the OP is referring to the M261 conversion unit that was marketed commercially and also used by the US armed forces for marksmanship training. I’m told that Black Dog also makes a plastic magazine that works with the unit. They seem to work best with standard GI-style hammer and trigger – aftermarket “match” hammer/trigger setups cause poor function.

In use, you simply remover the AR15 bolt/carrier and slide in the conversion unit. The .22LR magazines are pushed down in a standard AR magazine and held in place by the magazine lips and the magazine follower.

Is there any advantage to the M261 over the CMMG, or earlier Colt .22 Conversions? Cost?
