M58 in 45colt

Hastings,

Very Well said. Thank You

I guess I already knew what you said, but never had put it all together in one statement.

As I help teach basic firearms to people here in Hawaii so they qualify under state law to be able to purchase a handgun, what you said is something that I will pass on to students and other instructors when we have "discussions" after class is over.

I think that a 45 Colt Mountain gun just may be the answer to this discussion, except for the HB.

Maybe a 3" HB?

Another gun for me to get.

Put me down as another vote for a fixed sight N frame .45 Colt. Much more versatile round than .45ACP; I am pondering on a new 22-4 but it would be the only .45ACP I would have and that would be another mouth to feed.

I can't recommend the 22-4 highly enough. Obviously it has the lock, mim parts, and no firing pin on the hammer, but mine is my current favorite revolver. In my neck of the woods 45acp is less expensive than 38special, 357mag, 44mag, ...etc. It's more than 9mm and 40s&w, but Smith doesn't make a 4" tapered barrel fixed sight square butt six shot revolver in either of those cartridges. When they do, I'll be sure to buy one of each. Anyway, it's worth having another mouth to feed if that mouth is .451-.452 in diameter.

Somebody upthread mentioned Peacemaker shooters, and I reckon that's me. Right now the highpowered handgun crowd at the house is:

New Service .45LC
Bisley Vaquero .45LC
Uberti Cattleman .45LC

SO for me a .45AR revolver don't make a lot of sense; why not a different one I can shoot my .45 cowboy loads through? As to protection, service grade .45 Colt loads (255gr at @900 f/s) will kill a man or medium size game as dead as it needs to be. Can you say that for 230s through a .45AR/ACP? If I'm going into dangerous game country, that's what the Bisley is for.

Another vote for the N frame fixed sight 45 Colt. Had a 25-5 years ago and should have kept it, but also prefer fixed sights for a field gun. Like others, have 45 Colt SAAs and could use a big Smith in the same caliber. My 22 Thunder Ranch is great, but would prefer a 45 Colt!

In a previous post, I stated if you do not need the POWER of the 44 MAG, then the 45 ACP revolver is the best choice...

Reloading with full or 1/2 Moon clips is pretty slick.

And there are a bunch of different factory loads, for most every reason.

And if you need a field revolver then Buffalo Bore 45 Auto Rim heavy cast loads will work...

However...

Hastings, do not forget that if you have a 41 Mag or a 44 Mag there are lighter factory loads, and also handloads that can duplicate the recoil/power/performance/ of the 45 ACP...

[I am wearing a 1970's 6.5" 29-2 right now...]

Plain Old Dave

Since you are a SAA 45 Colt kind of guy, then you should have a 45 Colt S&W...

And instead of getting a 44 Mag for MAGNUM power, get a 454 Freedom Arms, or a 460 S&W as they will shoot 45 Colt loads/bullets/ as well.
