I have a 586-3 4" from 1989 with the factory matte blue finish and round butt (product code 103591) in near unfired condition, with the original box/papers/etc. As much as I think these guns are very nearly the perfect .357 mag revolver, I find myself reluctant to shoot it because of the condition and rarity. I have trouble keeping guns I don't shoot, so I've been considering selling it, but I'm having a difficult time determining current market value.

Has anyone seen any recent sales of one of these guns? A search of GB completed auctions hasn't turned up anything, and though one was recently posted in the classifieds here, the condition was quite different.

Opinions?

I have one with a six inch barrel. Because of the matte finish I use it as a shooter and woods gun. I don't think they really command more value than a comparable bright blue in same condition. I think most would buy it as a shooter. And they are wonderful shooters.

You are right, a 1989 build. Back when S&W seemed to have the "New gun of the month" program going. That's when I picked up my 36-6, which is the J Frame mirror image of your 686. I can tell you the finis is not as tough, and will show holster wear with minimal use. I don't think has a great difference in value, possibly a 10% bump to someone who is really looking for one.

Why not look for a 36-6 and have a matched pair?

This one now belongs to another collector, but I do miss it.

Great looking 586, although I would have to have RB to SB conversion grips for it. That gun should be worth $800 to $1000 I would think. Heck maybe more.

I have a 2 1/2" RB 19-5 with a similar finish. The letter calls it "bead blast blue" and it was shipped to the U.S. Department of State. I had to letter the gun because I had never seen that finish before. Turns out it was money well spent.

Thanks to all for the input.

I know exactly what the gun is, a limited run of 2500 (they also made a similar amount of 6" versions) from the "Gun of the Month" period as Richard noted. They just come up for sale so rarely in near NIB condition that I was hoping someone had seen one sell recently. If I make the decision to sell, I'll probably just go with a high-end GB seller that is local to me and see what the market brings.

A member of the DSS contacted me about a year ago on the forum looking for one of those. Said he had some buddies looking for them.
I wasn't interested in selling though. This one has the box and factory letter.

I have a bright blue round butt 586-5 from 1995/96. Seem to recall paying about $300-325 for it.....15 years or so ago.
IIRC it was wearing round to square grips. I had the dealer pull the rubber to check for rust and found the round butt.....knew it was going home with me!
Like yours it now wears a set of Spegel extended Boot grips in Birdseye maple!

2500 is half the number of Registered Magnums...... bet most were someones last duty revolver!
