By mistake I purchased 100 rounds of 22 Longs ( not Long Rifle). I have a model 617. If I use the 22 Longs will it leave a ring in the charge holes that will make it difficult to insert and eject the 22 long rifle cartriges? Please help? Thanks.

S&W2244: They won't hurt your cylinder. I recommend cleaning just the cylinder after shooting the 100 up and before starting with any Long Rifles. ....... Big Cholla

The .22longs can be shot from the 617, more than likely it will leave a powder burn ring. However it should be fairly easy to run a brass bristle cleaning rod through the cylinder bores to remove the fouling. I have to do this with my M-34 and M-18 just shooting .22LR since a ring occurs making it difficult to continue to shoot the LR.

Shoot the longs, clean the chambers and then shoot the LR.

Am I wrong in thinking that the cases of .22 Long and Long Rifle are the same length? I thought the main difference was the bullet weight...
But I've been wrong before.

Thanks to all who replied. Learned something new today. Didn't realize the cases were the same length for both the 22 Long and the 22 Long Rifle.

I make a point to run a patch with Breakfree through bore & chambers, as well as frame cut & exterior. Residue is on top of the film which makes cleaning so much easier.

Always worked with soft "low bid" 38 & 357 qualification reloads too! Believe me it's worth the time.
