Magnas and T Grip

Contemplating putting magnas and Tyler T on my 340 and shooting +P 38's. Anybody have experience with this set up in in terms of recoil and controllability??

I like Magnas and T Grips. I had them on a very nice 28 back when you could buy that setup for the price of an old ford. Sadly they got traded away. The magnum in a 4" bbl did not feel appropriate to me at the time. I'm sure your design of 38+P will be pleasantly adequate. I however have not recognized much advantage of the + nor the P.

Not that gun but at one time almost all of my S&W revolvers with Magnas had Tyler Ts on them. I love that setup.

I just got a Model 64 with a set of Mag as and a Tyler T. Today was my first time shooting a gun with this setup. I thought it a very comfortable grip combo.

Tyler t and magnas on a k-38 with a 4" barrel. I have medium/large hands and with +Ps that's a tiny handful to hang on to. It's small!

I had problems with my Model 36 when using magnas and a T grip. Being able to only fit two fingers on the gun made it tough to keep stable in the hand. Just not enough meat on the grip to properly fill the hand, even with the T grip. Larger boot grips that have more girth might work but I just go with grips on my J frames that allow me to get all three fingers on them.


K frames on the other hand are perfect for me with magnas and a T grip. I have a 2inch RB Model 10 with that combination and I love it.

This is my 442 setup. Greatly prefer it to the clip grip for feel and control.

Had to search to find out what a 340 was, too many models!

I only carried J frames for about a decade and they were the Model 36 and Model 36-1, so all steel construction. I used Magnas and grip adapters and they concealed well and handled better. All of my revolvers are set up that way so I might be biased.

Grips are like footwear. What is comfortable for me might not work for you.

When shooting .357 ammunition in either 340 model, I've found that NO grip works in mitigating recoil and increasing control so I've stuck with the OEM boot-grip knockoffs.On a side note, these grips duplicate very well the feel and size of your proposed setup. As to shooting .38 +P in these guns, I never have: it's not why I bought them.

And remember, if you want to see your T-grip again, remove it before taking the gun in for service...

Magnas with a Tyler T grip adapter works well and looks and feels great on a 2.5" S&W model 66 No dash. I shoot this often with 357 magnums and don't find it abusive at all. In fact I shoot well (for me...eyes are failing me!) with them. I know that Pachmyers are much easier to handle recoil and there is a little precision pickup. But it's much harder to Conceal Carry with those rubber grips. Plus they don't look nearly as nice.
The nicest setup I have used on this gun and other K frame 357 magnums are the S&W RB Combat stocks

I have small hands and short fingers, so even though I love the look of target stocks they don't fit my hand. I have found the best fit for me in K and N frame guns is magna grips and some type of grip adapter.

In about 1983 my agency went from a 2.5 inch Model 66-1 to a four inch Model 66-2. They were ordered with square butt "PC magna" grips and issued with the Tyler T grip adapter. It was actually quite comfortable for me but most of the agents objected and put Pachmayr grips on them.

Not in recent decades, but back in the 1970s and 80s, my 2 primary carry guns were a 2.5" Model 19 and a round butt Model 36. Both with magnas and the shiny aluminum Tyler T grip adapter. Provided a good firing grip and good concealablility.

I carry my 340PD w/factory wood magnas & a TGrip and while not too comfortable, you can control follow up shots w/.38 +P. The muzzle flip and torque w/.357 is too much for me to get accurate follow up shots, but my XLG hands could have a lot to do w/that.

I am a great fan of Tylers and and Magnas, but NOT on an aluminum J-frame RB, even for standard-pressure ammo. I wouldn't shoot +P in ANY aluminum J-frame, including one rated for .357 Magnum. It's not about pressure, it's about recoil.

YMMV. I know one very knowledgeable gun-rag writer and retired police chief who DID like a Tyler and Magnas on his 642. For me, it just caused my middle-finger knuckle to get rapped by the trigger guard.

P.S. For me, Tyler and Magnas ARE OK on SB aluminum J frame with standard-pressure ammo.

Personally, I put Tyler's T's on all my revolvers that came from the factory with magnas. Such a classic look, especially with bronze on blued guns. That's my absolute favorite look.

I use a T Grip type (BK grip, excellent quality, check them out, and quick delivery) on my S&W Model 637, just shot 100 rds this morning, with 35 being +P (Federal 38G 158 gr SWCHP +Ps) They handle the +P's perfectly...they definitely improve controllability of the standard magna wooden grips.
