I have a Lew Horton 624 and a Talo 686P both in 3" barrels. My LGS now has a Talo 629 3" & Talo 686P 5" in stock. I don't have a 44 mag so that would add a 44M and another 3" to the gang. But then again I don't have a 5" and that would give the 686p a longer twin and finally add a 5" barrel to my harem. I really can't afford either one. So which one should I get?

You're not providing us with enough information to make a call. We need to know stuff like, are you married? If so, do you want to remain married? How well stocked is your larder? Do you like pork-n-beans and ramen noodles? Do you have a local thrift store? How far is the trip to your job? Do you have a bicycle?

To answer Joe, divorced and happy. Pretty much yes to all the other questions including the bicycle. Can we really afford the guns we want? If yes then I'd be buying both to join the other 22 girls in the safe. Don't worry, I'll still be eating steak and ice-cream. So which one?

Personally, I'd go with the 3 inch 629. While I have some long barreled revolvers that I enjoy shooting they just don't get me going as much as shooting a shorter barrel. Fact is my 6 1/2 inch 610 is a bit of a tank and distinctly muzzle heavy so it gets tiring after 100 rounds or so. On the other hand I'll shoot my 4 inch 625 until either I run out of ammo or the cylinder gets hot enough I can't close it without gloves.

However, if I ever do break down and purchase a 44 Magnum you can be sure of one thing. That is that I would never shoot a 44 Magnum with it. I've already determined that my particular limit for recoil is the 357 Magnum and wish to preserve my wrists as long as I can. If I were 20 years younger I'd probably think differently, however I've finally come to the age when I realise that I just don't need to beat myself up just to do it.

I can afford it. Just not both. Just a habit to say I can't in an effort to put off having to buy another safe to soon. But the budget says only one. Thanks for all the comments. If it helps my defense guns are covered. Just an early Xmas present to myself.

A tough situation in which to make a bad decision-good choices both in my view, and scooter-I'll bet you would enjoy shooting my Taurus (yes-I said it) model 44 8 3/8 that comes with a full underlug and factory porting-maybe with a rubber grip-easy like a Sunday mornin' Bubba. Flapjack.

My thinking is with the 5"'686 I can play with .38's at the range and for plinking and keep the 3" stoked with .357's as a defense gun. With the 629 3" I can semi-retire the 624 which shoots those specials real sweet and I'll have the option of shooting the specials or the magnums. The one point that leans me a little to the 5" is that I don't have a barrel in that length and I'd like to have a Smith of each barrel length in my collection. By the way those Taurus's are good guns and I've never had one fail me.

This is perhaps the saddest thread I have ever read. I think it was the "divorced and happy" that got it going downhill -- certainly by the time "I really can't afford either one" became "I can afford it -- just not both" my head was starting to slump forward. I am with Old Bear on this one.

I'm sorry. But divorced and happy sure beats married and miserable which also was just a lighthearted reply to Joe in the second post. And if you bothered to read the other posts I explained why I have a habit of telling myself I can't afford it even though I can. So since some can't read and comprehend, why don't we consider this thread done. And thanks to the others that get it. I'll just get whichever one that I can't let go of when I go and handle them.

Which one really, and I mean really calls to you? Me I really don't need a 44 mag I would love one but since I don't hunt it would rarely get used. But if you have had your heart set on a 44 then go for it. With 22 guns in the safe you are obviously not in NEED of a gun either way so go for the one you really want no matter the practicality.

PS if your gun store does layaway just put both on layaway. Thats what I do. I have a les baer 1911, and a S&W 327 PC snubbie on layaway right now.

I always find it amazing that one has to resort to an internet forum to help them make a decision. Why not ask "what kind of beer should I drink?" or "what kind of vehicle should I buy?"
