making 260 brass from 7mm-08

Making 260 from 7mm-08 and have a question

I bought some Winchester 7mm-08 brass because of all the negative reviews on Remington's 260 brass. Can I just run this through my full length RCBS 260 resizing die or do I need anoth step in the process?

260 Rem is another name for the wildcat 6.5-.308 and was selected by Remington in part to have a cartridge that would cycle through short actions which the 7mm Mauser cartridge is too long for. You will have to shorten your 7x57 brass which has me wondering why you didn't choose to just neck down .308 brass. I have made a lot of 6.5-06 cartridges without thinning the necks but you need to be sure there is a little clearance for your converted case necks to expand to release the bullet.

Oops! I need to read more carefully. I'd be surprised if simply necking down 7mm-08 wouldn't work fine but I haven't done it.

The primer pockets are too loose and the brass is inconsistent, so I have been told. I just started reloading rifle cartridges so I am going by the popular concensus.

If there was another size die in between then I would say yes but you will be fine otherwise. Be sure to lube the brass correctly and definitely trim the brass when you are done.

Just a suggestion -- before you do anything else, try using the .260 Rem brass. You will find out as you go along that a fair percentage of what "they" say is pure BS.

I considered writing the same thing myself but the O.P. already owns the Win. brass and 1/2 mm is such a minor neck down that it's no more effort than resizeing 260 brass. Just pay attention to the normal variables caused by manufactureing tolerances in chambers and FL resizers, mostly headspace.

Just run the 7-08 brass thru your .260 sizing die, being sure to lube the inside of the neck as well as the outside. That should be all that's required, except to check for length and possibly trim for squareness.

Yes, you can do it and it isn't a big deal. You should be successful.

FWIW, I mistakenly mixed a 30-06 case into my 6.5-06 brass and ran it through the sizing die many years back. It came out perfect for the 6.5-06. Now I do it on purpose.

You may have to trim to length after sizing, but that's no big deal either.

Unless yo uhave a very tight chamber, it shouldn't be a problem. I have no issues w/ a lot of 100 RP 260 cases I bougth when I put my 260AI together. They last just as long as my higher priced Lapua 243 cases I use to neck up to 260.

I hear ya on that one, but this comes up so often on reviews and forums that I figured I would not take the chance. I will be getting some cheap Rem 260 to break in the barrel and when I reload them I will see if there is a difference.
