Maroon boxes auctions prices wow

That HD box is a scarce box - it is from the transitional era: 1946-1949/50. The SN on bottom is right at the end of the transitional guns, and the gun itself could have had any features, but is unlikely to have had the short action AND 4 line address, AND knurled ejector tip (which would make the gun a model of 1950). IIRC, the end of the post war transitional N frames is said to be S72500, which is approximate. The gun likely had at least 1 of the transitional features: long action, 1 line address, sharp shoulder magnas, or the coveted LERK. On top of all that, the 4in post war trans HD is less common than the 5in version (most common) and the 6.5in being scarce.

The M&P box appears to be complete, perhaps the person had the gun for it!

HD box: $433
M&P Box: $675

I can understand the price for a Heavy Duty box, but the M&Ps were a very common gun in their day.
Oh, well....one man's trash is another man's treasure.

The latest serial numbered transition HD is S75700 range. The 4 line address and straight ejector rod came to the 4" in the S68000 range. All 5 inch models we have seen had the large ejector rod until the introduction of the 1950 model. Additionally, we start seeing in the same S68000 range the hammer studs changing and being smooth fitted to the frame unlike the previous ones that had a "dimple". Around the early S72000 range until the 1950 models were produced, the 38/44 Heavy Duty was the only "S" serial numbered N frame produced. With this said, there are some 3000+ hds between S72000 and S75700.

The M&P box had an original hangtag. It didn't warrant that price.
I have a mint 1917 Commercial maroon box. I wonder if I should put it on that site.

I would have bought the HD box at that price but the M&P box was high to say the least. The hang tag for the M&P was cool, never seen one before.

About a year ago I sold a 99% M&P 6" to a forum member in its original maroon box and it had this same hang tag in it. He got the gun for not much more than what this box sold for. Crazy.

That hang tag dates back to World War II. Since most of S&W production went into war production I doubt that many guns were available for civilian sales.

Here is how I see it. That is a mint M&P box and the only scuff is the top of the label, which can be repaired. The box is as clean as I have seen, with no marks or abrasions inside or out. By itself, it should be worth $200. The early Helpful Hints pamphlet is also pristine and has sold for $200 in lesser condition. Let's say the post-card and hang tag are $50 each. That gets us to $500.

That still falls short of the value, so I agree the buyer paid too much.

I won a really nice red box (M&P) in an online (Proxybid) auction last Summer for a steal price of $50. When I received the shipment, it was a ratty, blue box for a Model 36 that had sold in the auction for $15. The auction house switched shipments in error. The other person who had bought that box, refused to return it. I got my money back, but the other guy got a really nice box for $15...<sigh>
