PICS added see post #17

I was watching this auction. Just ended and I was stunned at the price this 34 brought.
I think the description is a little generous on the cosmetic condition.
I figured bidding would have reached maybe $500.00 - $525.00 tops.
Thought two bidders just let their egos take over until the third one jumped in at the end.
Am I that out of touch on the pricing of this particular model and vintage?

Seems a little high to me as well....mine, in similar condition and similar vintage, was bought a couple of years ago for under $500.

Mine is a 34-1 from November 1980.

First, it appears to be a Model 34-1, but the pic could be playing games with me.

I'm not terribly surprised by the price. The Kit Guns are getting awfully popular, and for good reason. A couple years back I paid $800 for one - 4" nickel in near perfect condition. I'm not sorry nor am I ashamed. :)

I was disappointed when I followed the link.
ONLY $722??? I thought it was supposed to be "high!"
I don't want to insult anyone, but man, some of you guys either have some great places to find new additions to your safes or you ain't bought anything new in ages! Seriously, $722 is one of the lower prices I've seen lately. I just spent around $200 parts and labor getting the barrel swapped from 4" to 2" on a 34-1 I've had for a while, simply because I couldn't afford what folks are asking for a "real" 2".

I'm with GerSan69 on this... for a 4" this would be somewhat higher than expected around here (but not very much!) For a 2" I don't think it would last an hour at a gun show or a day at a LGS. They just seem to be taking off in popularity and therefore price.

I recently seen nib 4" ca 1969 going for over $800.

I believe both the 2" & 4" are low production guns relative to other models.

To me a 2" J frame with adjustable sights and that big front sight ramp is a must for my collection.

Kobsw

From what I've seen here in the midwest, that's a very reasonable price. All Smith J frame and K frame .22s have gone up in the last couple of years, but the Js have caught up with and in some instances surpassed the Ks. Right now I consider any pre '82 Smith .22 revolver that would rate 95% or better for around $700 a real bargain.

PICS ADDED

Remembered that I had promised some pics when I got back from the bird hunt. Completely forgot until this evening. Sorry, artificial light, cell camera and most of the pics looked terrible. Picked the best 5. The entire gun is in consistent with the quality of finish shown. The blue is a lot deeper than the pics show. Last pic is with a cool little S&W holster from a forum member.

Thanks for all the input.
My interest was due to having purchased one a couple months ago from a local auction house.
I thought I was paying top dollar, but I wanted the gun and didn't care. Just do not see them around here.
I was just surprised and still am somewhat at the $ these little guns are bringing.
I am now properly schooled and it seems that I came out a lot better than I thought I did.
Would post a pic, but haven't taken any of it yet. Maybe another post.

Chukar60, Good to hear and be sure to post pics.

By the way here's the ca 1969 34 I posted about, I bought it and have no regrets.

It was worth every penny.

Kobsw

He had some nice pics. I'm sure that didn't hurt his chances of getting a good price for the gun. As to the final figure, I too was expecting something quite a bit more. $1200 wouldn't have shocked me. A bidding war is a poor way to buy a gun. :)

Within the last 2 years ( after searching local shops proved fruitless) I picked up a 2" nickel square butt ( was really wanting blued but simply could not find one under $800 even then) for under $600 including ffl and shipping. Not pristine, simply a solid working / range gun and felt fortunate to get it at that price
