Bought this 4" revolver several years ago.
It has a N marked on the frame, but not with the serial number 99462.
Appears to be a no dash, pinned bbl and recessed cylinder?
Can anyone tell me the approx year made, and current value?
Thank you.

Always remember that the official serial number for BATF purposes is on the butt of the revolver. The SN stamped in the frame beneath the lunette is for convenience and, as far as I remember, was only stamped there on revolvers originally shipped with target stocks that would conceal the butt serial number.

The serial number is N788462. 99462 is an assembly number stamped on fitted parts to keep them together during manufacturing. Your Model 57 probably was made in late 1979 or early 1980. Someone else will help with value.

Welcome to the Forum! Doc44, one of our preeminent Forum gurus, is correct about the s/n of your Model 57 and the date of manufacture. Here's my minty 1981 nickel Model 57 (s/n N834280). I bought this one a couple of years ago to replace a 4" blued Model 57 that was stolen from me during an apartment burglary. The one that was stolen was the first S&W revolver that I ever purchased, and it was brand new when I bought it in 1978! The burglar left me the presentation case and I still have it. I believe that your Model 57 would be valued around $1000 in it's present condition. Enjoy!

I think $1000 is a floor for your 4 inch P&R no dash 57. I paid almost $1200 for one three years ago although it had the presentation box (badly deteriorated flocking)/tools and may have been unfired.

I would be surprised to find a 4 inch P&R 57 tagged at less that $1200 where I shop and $1500 wouldn't surprise me.

Jeff is definitely right. I got this one recently for just less than $1000 after taxes and auction fees...but only because it was labeled as a 67 in the auction title.
