I thumbed through my Dad's scrapbook this morning and took a few photos of the originals. My Dad and my Uncle James "Roscoe" Wright met at Camp Gruber, Oklahoma and were in the 42nd Rainbow Division as part of the cadre. One photo shows Dad, front and center, wearing private stripes but, he later attained the rank of Staff Sgt. "Roscoe" is second from the right in the photo of the mortar crew. Dad was transferred from the 42nd to the 32nd Red Arrow Division.

The other photos were purchased by my Dad from a Seabee. Dad saw action in New Guinea, at Buna and Gona, he was in the invasion/landing at Leyte and was wounded leading an assault on a pill box. Taken first to a field hospital, where the wounded had to move out of the way of Japanese artillery rounds that were duds, he was transferred by a PT boat to the USS Hope for the trip home.

I just got back from our town's Memorial Day parade. I was there as a representative from the local squadron of the Sons of the American Legion. Since I can't march the parade route anymore, I got to be one of the drivers for some of the town dignitaries. We went from the school complex, stopped at a memorial set up in the center of town and then proceeded to the cemetery for the ceremony. The high school band performed both on the parade route and at the ceremony. As part of the ceremony, a 94 year old veteran of the Korean War was recognized. Members of two BSA Scout troops addressed the gathering, and the band saluted America with the National Anthem and other patriotic music. Representatives on the podium of the service organizations in town were introduced.

I used to be able to march the parade route but my bum knee won't allow that now. I am glad that the organizer of the Memorial Day parade asked me to be one of the drivers so I could participate in it. It does mean a lot to me.
