I thumbed through my Dad's scrapbook this morning and took a few photos of the originals. My Dad and my Uncle James "Roscoe" Wright met at Camp Gruber, Oklahoma and were in the 42nd Rainbow Division as part of the cadre. One photo shows Dad, front and center, wearing private stripes but, he later attained the rank of Staff Sgt. "Roscoe" is second from the right in the photo of the mortar crew. Dad was transferred from the 42nd to the 32nd Red Arrow Division.
The other photos were purchased by my Dad from a Seabee. Dad saw action in New Guinea, at Buna and Gona, he was in the invasion/landing at Leyte and was wounded leading an assault on a pill box. Taken first to a field hospital, where the wounded had to move out of the way of Japanese artillery rounds that were duds, he was transferred by a PT boat to the USS Hope for the trip home.
