I need help getting info an a Merwin Hulbert (MH) .38 S&W five shot revolver. On the left side of the frame are the words Merwin Hulbert but on the top strap it says Hopkins & Allen Mfg with patent dates with the last being Mar 6 77.
The revolver has the take down features of a MH, it has a spur trigger with nickel finish. The grips are black plastic with the dog head. The s/n is 52xx. Any help would be appreciated.

What info do you want? Is it a spur trigger SA or a trigger guard DA?

I remembered that the dogs head grips were on the early spur trigger SA's. There were 3 types of these. 1st model without a loading gate. 2nd model with a loading gate and 3rd model with enclosed cylinder pin and loading gate.
All Merwins were made at the Hopkins and Allen factory and most are so marked.
These guns were made in the late 1870's and 1880's

I have several Merwins, what I will pass along is that after several years of research and collecting them, two things to know. As Iby stated,made by Hopkins but a 100 % Merwin design and in my opinion they are quite a unique piece of engineering. Unfortunately a fire in the late 1880's destroyed all factory records and related material. The second one is, treat it and its original parts like gold because there are less of them everyday. They basically breakdown into two models, the pocket version which is probably what you have, 32 or 38 small frame,single then double action in later models. The large "Army" frame was in 44-40 caliber. The rare models are actually those in blue as nickle was standard. The most sought after is the 44-40 with the skull crusher point at the end of the stock and scalloped cylinder flutes. Several thousand dollars to most collectors. There are also fake ones out there too.

this is an old thread but I just happened to get here and I just happened to have acquired a 2nd model merwin 38 spur trigger single action in it's original box.
near new.
 
I would love to own a Merwin Hulbert. They are amazing pistols.

When I worked at a local history museum the collections department had 2 Merwin's, One was an early open top Army model in 44-40 in decent shape, but well used. The other was a pocket model in 32 S&W. It had the folding hammer and an extra 6" barrel, to go along with the 4" that was on the pistol. Both barrels had the same serial number as the pistol. That one was in perfect shape.

I hope to acquire one someday.
