after reading the post about metal roofs ,Iam thinking of getting a metal roof on my house so hopefuly wont have to worry about new roof after i retire ,thought about a standing seam metal roof ,but saw were interlocking metal shingle roofs were a little cheaper ,and easier to install, anyone have the metal shingle roof ,and how do they compare to a standing seam metal roof ,the pro-and cons ,any drawbacks to metal shingles? wil let the roofers install ,wasnt sure if they had a better chance of leaking or blowing off

Check with your insurance company first. A hail storm will dent asphalt comp shingles and the insurance companies will usually replace your roof because the waterproofing integrity is compromised. On a metal roof if your roof is all dented up by hail and looks terrible many insurance companies won't pay a penny because they say it will still keep out water. See which metal roof product resists hail better and what your insurance company recommends.

Some of my neighbors have metal roofs. I live in an area that gets hit with hurricane winds almost yearly and last year Hurricane Florence blow through and took out a lot of asphalt roofs.

The standing metal roofs appeared to have no damage. One house that is on the Nuese River had their asphalt shingles replaced by metal shingles after the storm. I found the metal shingles to be more visually appealing than the standing seam roofs in the area.

That said, I would go with a top quality asphalt roof like GAF or Certainteed and get the work done by one of their certified installers because I can get the job done for half the price.

I had my house reroofed with GAF Timberline HD (not Ultra) shingles a couple of years before I retired. I liked the looks of the model house and roofing material pictured in their advertising that my son and I repainted the house to look like the brochure model. The results were stunning. We sold the house a year after we retired and the folks that bought the house put a cheap red roof on it. Yuck!

Oh well, here is a good article that touches on some important points that may help you make the best decision for you and your family... Best Roof Shingles: GAF vs Certainteed

And I am a living example of that. Nada insurance coverage. However, my standing seam roof still looks good from the street. Up close it has numerous tiny hail dents from a heavy hailstorm almost three years ago. They give it character.

I'd choose standing seam over metal shingles as I think they are more likely get beat up from a hailstorm.

I had my new house built in 2003-4. I specked out standing seam metal roof and very happy with my selection! It has been through a few hail storms, a couple rather nasty. Roof looks and works fine.

I live out in the boonies and forest fire possibilities are very good, that was a reason I wanted a good metal roof. We also get a lot of snow up here and those roofs shed it quite well.

Deepening on the ambient temperature, amount of sun and consistency of the snow when the roof clears its self it can go from a slow casual dropping almost straight down to a avalanche that can land snow 7-10' from house. That keeps the very heavy snow weight under control.:) Also scares the cats big time!

Now I live in a post and beam house and when the rain comes noise can be quite intense.. When we get a Gully Washer rain just about have to double the TV volume to hear it. Course most times those extremely severe rains last a short duration, the ordinary rain is not annoying.
