i just finished reading an artical on the internet about the mexican drug cartels coming into arizona and buying guns , alot of guns ! the artical said "straw byers" are going into a shop there and buying 20 AK-47's at a time . i cheked the dealer's site out and the pictures of their store show the display walls full of different styles of A-K's . how do they get away with buying that many at a time ?

The ATF dropped the ball. Heck, I got delayed in a purchase earlier last year because I wanted to buy two rifles at same time. The seller could be spacing out the paperwork on the rifles so it didnt look like they were being bought enmass.

the ATF said they were embarrassed and dissappointed . they said one guy bought 640 A-K's at that store between sept. 09- dec. 2010.

ATF probably should do a very careful investigation of this stores paperwork, and I'm sure they are. The buyer would be purchasing 42+ AK'S a month for 15 straight months, give me a break, buying more than 1 AK a day every day, as if this wouldn't raise your suspicions.

According to a news article last night the ATF states they can't account for tens of thousands of firearms that were supposed to be in dealers inventories. The law does not require dealers to do an annual audit. Some of these weapons were stolen, some simply "disappeared". A number of dealers lost their licenses. Also, given the lack of resources, ATF can only check 1 in 10 dealers per year. Right now the (drug) violence is mainly south of the border. If it moves north, then we'll see action by Congress. I'd rather we deal with the problem now, in a way that doesn't infringe on law abiding gunowners, than later when we may all suffer a very restrictive firearms law.

I am skeptical when I hear these stories because even with the unaccounted for firearms that BATFE says are demonstrated by poor record keeping or auditing practices by dealers, I have to wonder with the resources that drug cartels have why they would go to the trouble to buy semi-auto AKs from commercial outlets in such quantities, even if they found a dealer greedy and stupid enough to accommodate them. They could easily buy cases of full auto AK's at cut-rate prices from any number of arms bazaars in Africa and the middle east. One guy they just took down (German?) is just one of these types who apparently have fleets of planes and boats that deliver loads of illicit guns and munitions world-wide.

So Paco and Manuel are crossing into Arizona and Texas to buy semi-autos at retail and smuggle them from the USA back into Mexico on a large scale ? Ain't buying it - that dog don't hunt.

I think due to shootings by whackos in the news lately and political pressure from the leftists we're just seeing another publicity campaign to frighten an ignorant and misinformed general public to try to get some traction for anti-gun legislation. Next thing you know they'll be saying Dick Berg has too many gun boxes.

All.
I totally agree with NFrameFred.
Semi Auto AK for $350-400 from USA.
Full Auto AK from arms dealer for $25 each if you buy a ship load from Romania.
Cartels have billions, 000,000,000, of dollars. The folks they are getting RPG's and grenades from will have the other weapons. They are going to buy bulk.
ATF is poorly run and the old media lies.
They are also buying Chinese radios and night vision optics, most likely because the are cheaper to buy than the ones from USA stores.
A lot of the semi auto AK's going to Mexico, go to the citizens who want a means to protect themselves from the cartels and corrupt police. Similar concept to what we believe in. They would like a 2nd amendment.

NFrameFred & RdrBill are undoubtedly correct. I conclude that the lamestream news media are lying, although there is at least a theoretical possibility that they are being taken in by ATF liars. But only because they want to be.

Gents, there are a few things you need to realize in this situation. First of all the article states that the dealers did nothing wrong. A straw purchase of this size just does not pass the smell test. Dealers are only required to report multiple hand gun sales, not rifles. Mexican cartels have unlimited financial resources, they dont need Congress to pass a budget. If they want it, they buy it, very simple. ATF did a good job as they kept 700 guns from going south. The violence from Mexican cartels is already here. Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry gave his life due to cartel violence already in the U.S. The percentages of guns originating from the US as given by the ATF are the percentages of traceable guns not the total of all of the guns used for criminal purposes in Mexico. Remember, Mexico still does business with Cuba and other countries that have surpluses of AK's and other arms. The majority of the explosive devices seized in Mexico either come from the Mexican military or countries other than the U.S.
You need to understand that this is a complex problem that has many variables that the mainstream media does not wiegh in on. Trust me on this one guys, I know of what I speak.

Sooo....... ya think we could get together on a group buy?????? Me Charlie, Louisiana Joe and rburg would be in for at least a couple apiece :D

The cartels aren't dumb. Why buy a semi auto AK for $400 and then try to get it across the US border, when they can buy any number of full auto AKs for $50 each and either bring them across the Honduras border which is almost unguarded, or bring them into some beach on the several thousands of miles of Mexico's shoreline?

Forget the AK,s, the cartels are going old school. Just saw on the news they were using a catapult to launch bales of pot over the border!

What about filing 'Export Decs' on items leaving the US? Failure to do so used to be a penalty, no?

(Or did DHSjokesters & Janetnopolitaco halt that practice?)
