Hi Gang, My Michigan concealed pistol permit expires 3-31-11. I plan to renew and have never done so before. If I am unable to take the certification test before 3-31, will I have to start over and take the complete test? Do you know of any classes in Feb or early March near Adrian?
Thanks,

Hey Stonecove, re-check the laws/rules about re-certification. It does NOT require that you take a class, despite what the folks, who are trying to get you into one of the re-cert classes, are telling you. Just make sure you save your receipt(s) to your next range/practice visit(s) and you've got $105 in your pocket.

Thanks Motorcity, Great news, but the $105 fee sucks! I need to get to a range that gives receipts-- I usually shoot outdoors. Any suggestions for indoor ranges close to Adrian?
Thanks again.

On the application that you will be signing, it states that you have reviewed the CURRENT laws and have fired your handgun at least 100 rounds in the past 6 months. They do not ask for proof or range receipts.
I do my shooting at the club that I belong to and have no receipts to show. I do keep up with changes in the law thru the attorney generals website. I have renewed twice now by just signing the application.

My concern with the receipts was that you might get some bureaucratic boob who would ask you for proof of practice. Most likely, it won't happen. But you will be required to sign a statement that you have 3 hours of pistol safety review and 1 hour range time, within the 6 months prior to re-cert.

As for indoor ranges around Adrian, dude, check your Yellow Pages or do an internet search. What am I, your secretary?:D

Congrats on carrying! Get your CPL renewed and continue to carry proudly. We need more people to carry concealed (in my humble opinion).

I'm from MI also.
I renewed last year. No re-training class is required. The renewal form asks you to certify (by your signature or maybe initials, if I remember correctly) that you have practiced recently. No range receipts or other proof required. Just your word.

I think the original question asked was:

There's two answers here. It is correct that a class is not required, but, if you live in Wayne County, you'll have a difficult time convincing the Gun Board of that - it's the second most common reason to be called before the board, just after applying for an Unrestricted CPL. Second, if you are unable to get your renewal in to the authorities to beat the expiration of your current CPL, you will, indeed, be required to start over and you will not be legal to carry until you receive the new CPL. There is no grace period and no excuse, such as "It took longer than expected." Right now, wait times are between 45-60 days - and longer if called before the Gun Board. If you apply before the deadline, be sure to keep the receipt from the county clerk for your $105.00. Make sure it's dated and keep it with your current CPL. THAT and only THAT makes you legal after the expiration date.

By the way, after the recent court cases, remember a very important thing: Simply handing your CPL along with your driver's license to an officer who stops you is NOT notice. You must tell the officer, immediately, that you are lawfully carrying and hand him the CPL with your license. Also, keep your hands on the wheel. The State Police, particularly, are going by the letter of the Court of Appeals decision.

Im in Macomb County Michigan and will be renewing mine for the first in a few months. I thought about taking the renewal class just for the heck of it. I was informed that renewals do not have to reappear before the Gun Board or get fingerprinted again.

Macomb is the most lenient Gun Board in SE Michigan - you are lucky. The only time the Gun Board will call you is to have you explain why you haven't paid your traffic tickets. :D

You will have to be printed this time - but never again. They have gone to electro-scan printing and from now on they'll "be in the computer."
