After the 37 year drought between 1978 and 2015, it looks like we may be in for a triple crown after just three years. I remember watching Secretariat win as a kid, then the back to back TC’s of Seattle Slew and Affirmed as a teen. I’ve always loved horses and spent many summers as a lad around them at my aunt and uncles farm near Charleston, SC.
When American Pharoah made his run for the roses three years ago, I dragged all my kids away from their xboxes/playstations/phones to watch it. I told them, just give me me three minutes and you won’t regret it. And they didn’t. In contrast, I mentioned to my wife a little while ago that Justify had won at Pimlico and we may have another TC going. She replied, “And I care, why?” And went back to watching real housewives from somewhere or another.

Anybody ever read W.C. Heinz's "Death of a Racehorse"? Look it up, it's a brilliant piece of news writing.

It's not political or anti-horse racing, just a great description of the downside of the sport. Of course, things are not as they were in 1947 or so when it was written, but injuries do occur and it captures the sentiment perfectly. I enjoy horse racing, but I am reminded every time I watch about that particular piece of journalism. It will stick with you.

Well, at least Justify now has a few years before he is sold to a slaughter house and sent to the French for food. I grew up 5 miles from a racetrack, went once. My 118lb College Wrestling Teamate was a retired jockey. His stories were as foul as him.

Ditto for Dog Racing.
