I have some military 308 ammo headstamped with the arsenal and year with a crosshair in a circle. Is this match brass or just general issue ammo?

Depends on the headstamp markings.

Likely just general issue ammo. The last two digits of the year and the NATO standardization emblem (circle divided into quadrants) are standard markings.

LC MATCH is what I've seen on Lack City match ammunition.

I agree. That circle with the + in it is generally referred to as the "NATO Cross", and just means it meets NATO spec.

All military match ammo I've ever seen has had MATCH on the headstamp.

The NATO specs meant it was annealed a little harder than was customary with US military brass; the H&K delayed blowback rifles used in some NATO countries didn't like the softer brass.

U.S.-made 7.62 x 51 military ammunition intended for the U.S. military is loaded to NATO specs and has the NATO cross-in-circle marking.

While there are some differences between the 308 WCF and the 7.62x51 Nato, since around 1976 I have been shooting both in rifles "labeled for one or the other" with no problems.

By that, I mean, I have interchanged 308 ammo and 7,62x51 ammo, and 308 rifles and 7.62x51 rifles, in every possible combination, from several different countries, including some military 7.62 ammo from non NATO countries with NO problems.

And I am talking several different rifles, and THOUSANDS of rounds fired.

308/7.62x51 NATO, I have never seen any PRACTICAL/FIELD differences...

I'd highly recommend that you stay away from Indian 7.62X51mm like the plague.

Rule 303

Way back, I got a case of Colombian Indumil 7.62x51. Very hot, my HK91 threw empties over 50 ft. Only downside was the ammonia smell after firing, guess the powder was ammonium nitrate based. Military ammo is OK if it has the nato "cross in circle" stamp. Israeli is pretty good too. Never got the Paki stuff (different from Indian) but I hear great things about it. Joe
