Hello Folks,

I’m inclined to purchase an absolutely mint 18-4; just the revolver with no box, etc. The owner wants about a $1,000.00 for it OTD. Am I romancing B.S. at that price? It’s veeeeerrry pleasing and checks all of the boxes. Thanks, Tom H.

Short version, for a mint 18-4 that's a fair price, IMHO.

I'm also in the Prescott area... I haven't seen an M18 for sale in any of the local shops for a VERY long time, so coming across one in person here is pretty rare. At the last gun show in Feb, I saw a ratty M18 on a table priced at $1350...

With patience and luck, you could probably buy one for less on one of the auction sites, but by the time you pay tax, shipping and FFL fees, you won't be that far ahead.

On May 1, 2017 I purchased, on this forum, a Model 18 no dash. Matching box, paperwork and tools. $800. It shipped April 1959

On May 14, 2016 I purchased, on this forum, a Model 18-3, original box, paperwork and tools. $995. It shipped Nov 1974.

Happy to see the market is catching up with me.

Looking at completed listings on Gunbroker, a typical price for a Model 18-3 or -4 is $7~800, going by completed listings on GB.

A -3 with box and papers sold for $874, a -4 described as "close to 100%" with a nice set of target grips, $667.

Most go unsold if offered for $900 or more. There are some exceptions, usually sold via buy-it-now. Sellers looking someone who just has to have that exact gun.

Just a moment...

So with a 10% sales tax and shipping costs the auction final cost is a bit shy of $900.00. Additionally, you don’t have the privilege of an in person inspection. I’m thinking I’m within a $100.00 of current market.

I recently jumped on a "minty" 18-2 for $995 - no box, etc., just the revolver. I've been searching for one for the past 4-5 years, so there wasn't any hesitation on my part.
She shoots very well and compliments my 17-4 as well.

OP
Buy the gun. Next one you see will cost more.
Don't wait to long.
I hear the collectors are starting to hoard them.

Yup, and inspecting it yourself is hard to put a value on. In my case, a $800 gunbroker purchase equates to $947, after 3% credit card fee, sales tax, shipping, and a local FFL fee.

On the other hand, GB is a good place to look for what sells and what doesn't, even if the pricing is not always relevant to my local market.

Is $1000 to high? Maybe. But if you like it and it’s that nice. Buy it. $100 literally does not fill my gas tank. Do you know how many guns I’ve passed on that I would gladly pay an extra $100 for today. $100 is dinner now days. And not a very elaborate one.

I love the .22 Combat Masterpiece. If I found one locally for $1k otd I’d pounce. It would definitely leave the shop in my hands. Don’t hesitate. You may never have this same opportunity again.

What are you waiting for? When guns like this go into a collection, they rarely go out. Or at least in my case, they just get passed down. The sooner you own one, the longer you get to enjoy it.
Did I mention how well they handle and shoot?

Cap

Here’s a few of my Model 18’s.
I have a couple of Model 18’s with target hammer and triggers and the original boxes show correctly.
big moose is right on the money because Model 18’s are fun to shoot and not listed for sale very often.
I would encourage you to buy the gun if it’s a nice one.
