Tonight I took my 642 out of the safe and found the thumbpiece missing from the frame. I looked around for it with no luck.

Exposed is a grove in the frame with a a threded stud coming out of the grove. A plus sign can be seen imprinted on black metal housed within the frame.

Two questions, Does anyone have and extra factory stainless thumpiece and correct screw that they would sell me? What does the Plus sign means there?

I have many Smith revolvers and have never had a thumbpiece fall off.

The 642 was purchased new in 97. I don't want the hassle and expense of sending it off if I don't have to.

Thanks

Fran M:

In my opinion, the best and quickest way to remedy this is to order the part you need from S&W directly, or you could order from Brownell or Midway if the factory doesn't have the part in stock (unlikely), or won't sell it to you without you sending it to the factory for installation - which I also think is unlikely. The part is fairly inexpensive if you want MIM. For stainless, it will cost you more. I've never lost a thumb piece from any of my revolvers, but I have read more than a few messages on this forum of those who have. I think this calls for Loc-tite when you install your replacement thumb piece.

Best of luck,

Dave

I have an extra one just like what you need. If you want it email me at [email protected]
Brownells sent me the wrong part and I never sent it back. But the retaining screw is blue (I think), will have to double check on that.

Sonny, let me know about the screw.

I don't remember if the thumbpiece was the old style like my 22 year old model 60 or the newer sort of slanted cut one.

Thanks

It should be the new style, thats when they were first introduced and I had one on my old 642-1 I used to have. I'm at work right now and will check on the screw when I get home.

I ordered the parts yesterday from Brownell's. Thanks to all for the help and replies.

Sonny, Mine is a 642-1 also. I ordered the new style. I really couldn't think what style latch it had.
