I hadn't had Buttermilk Pie in a long time. It was hard for me to find outside of the South.

My paternal grandfather (originally from South of the Mason-Dixon) spoke of it, so when I was stationed in Virginia I had to find it and try it. I loved it at first smell!

A year ago I was reminiscing about it with my wife and decided to find a recipe; but they were all somewhat different. I finally found the one that tasted the same as I remembered (I may even share this recipe). Here is a pic I took of how it turned out:

Used to be a BBQ place near me that sold buttermilk pie, haven't had any in a few years but do have the recipe. Probably one of my favorite pies.

Recipe I used.

Here is a link to the recipe I used: Food Wishes Video Recipes: Search results for Buttermilk pie

Each oven, crust, and pie plate are a little bit different, so you may have to adjust times. My prebaked crust required 21 minutes, and the whole pie required the full 55 minutes, in my oven.

Note: Food Wishes is my favorite food blog. Chef John really knows how to clearly present the recipe and techniques, has good light humor (OK, maybe a little corny too), and the videos are about the food - not him. Browse the blog; it is well worth it.

I'm not much of a "pie" person. I think it has more to do with crust texture. However, that pie looks so good I might try it one day. Like the addition of lemon and nutmeg which reminds me of Scandinavian food. I think the berries on the side would be key to add another layer of flavor. Thank you for sharing!

thank you for posting that blog.
i book marked it as i'm always looking for ideas.

Am all over the shoe fly pie, and after jonesing for years, made several last year. Unfortunately use store bought crusts, as my baking skills are sub par.

Also made some real (meat/hard liquor) mince meat pie, but with rum.

My great grandfather was raised Mennonite, by the River Brethern sect.
