Greetings, I purchased a S & W mod-29 awhile back and am wondering if it is factory correct. Inside back of yoke MOD-29, coke grips with medallions, 4-screw, ser. no. S185XXX, {6 1/2" ported barrel} ??, sights adjustable. I have done some research but am not sure about ported barrel any info would be appreciated. MNman

There are three drilled ports on each side of front sight ?

There were no 4 screw model 29's ever offered from the factory with any type of porting to the barrel. Aftermarket job done after the revolver was purchased. Still sounds like a real nice shooter.

Yes it is a very clean 29 in excellent condition with a few dings here and there considering its date of mnfg.

Yes it would, the porting didn't help much with some factory loads. I wonder if the porting {six drilled holes} was smithed or factory?

A 29 will have either an S prefix to the serial. The number you provided is not a correct serial. When there is a letter in the serial, believe it or not it is part of the serial.

Magtech 240 Gr must be a fairly hot factory load, the recoil felt heavy compared with other loads fired. I wonder what a 5" redo would do to the value of this firearm?

Honestly, not much. It may add a little value for those that understand what it costs to have a barrel shortened and front sight replaced. Of course, it has to be done very well to maintain the value.

If it were mine, and I wanted a 5 inch, than it would be a perfect candidate for said work. I'd probably try to find a red post front sight for it as well just to make it that much more unique.

Pricey I'm sure, maybe in the near future I'll consider selling. The Model 29 is definitely a beauty to behold. I don't have any history of this firearm so I'll assume the porting was done 70's or 80's. MNMan

Here's a MagnaPorted Model 29 6.5" and what I thought of when I read your first post.

It came to me with a clam shell presentation case and the Laurence holster shown in the photo and a set of diamond center walnut target stocks. When I got it home, I replaced the walnut targets with these other stocks that I picked up at a gunshow for $75. :) - They seem to fit it quite well.

For me, anything that tames the recoil on the 44MAG is something that I'm interested in having on my shooters. Otherwise, it's just no fun to shoot at all after the 1st or 2nd round.

Great combination, thanks for sharing. My 29 has the blue finish which I prefer but any configuration is totally acceptable. Also my 29 has the red sight front, and adjustable rear. :)
