All,

Picked up my (advertised 1961-1962) no-dash Nickel 10 today. Hope I do better on this one. Just under 700 bucks all in. Serial number C548423. 4-screw nickel. Stocks numbered wrong, not sure about vintage correctness.

Should it be a 1957 or 1958?

"Shoot" me some opinions, and this one is a keeper either way. I will be putting some white Ajax grips on it, and on display. So, there is that.

Carl

Looks like the one I was issued by the PD in 1969. I only shot it at the qualifying range and only pulled it once in the line of duty. I saw one just like it in a pawn shop in Byron, Ga. recently. Nice addition to any collection.

According to nearby serials I see, 1961/62 is accurate. The L on the face of the cylinder is for the left hand extractor rod threads (IIRC).

Hoping on the '61. That would make it my birth year gun. Must have hung around the factory for awhile. I think it is a candidate for a letter.

Thanks,

Carl

Must have hung around the factory for a while.
Not really. There would be no model marked guns shipped in 1957, and the earliest model marked units show up in the C437000 range, shipping in the summer of 1958.

There were a ton of M&Ps in the C460000 range that shipped in 1959 that were not model marked.

C438236 is a Model 10 that shipped in September 1958.
Two of the lowest numbers I know of on the Model 10 are C4692xx and C4700xx. Both of them shipped in September 1959.

The dash 1 has the heavy barrel, which yours does not have.

The dash 2 and 3 change was exactly the same; 10-2 tapered barrel, 10-3 heavy barrel.

Interestingly, your revolver has the -2 change. The left-hand threaded extractor rod is very obvious on your revolver. So, despite the MOD 10 marking in the yoke cut, your revolver is actually a Model 10-2. Notice that it still has four frame screws. That change didn't take place until the 10-4 in 1962.

Like it very much. Some light polishing with flitz will help with the light scratches on the barrel and will make the nickel really shine. My 10-7 nickel from 1979. I am fond of nickel Model 10s with standard barrel as I carried one in the 1970s (a 5" and then 4") as a municipal officer. Enjoy your fine revolver.
