I have a Model 10 no dash, serial number C484103, 4 screw, with 4" tapered barrel and right-hand extractor rod. Would I be correct to say that the Model 10 with no dash were only made in 1957 and 1958, perhaps 1959?

I found a serial number table that showed 1961 for my number, but I think it cannot be correct. The Standard Catalogue says the 10-1 came out in 1959. Thanks!

No. That would not be correct. The dash one was assigned in 1959 for a different configuration (heavy barrel). The "no dash" continued in production until the 10-2 came along in 1961. Both the Model 10 and the Model 10-1 were made concurrently for a couple years.

In addition, existing frames and other parts sometimes outlasted the change dates, so some Model 10 revolvers may have been assembled even after the Model 10-2 was available. If it had a right hand threaded extractor rod, it would still be a Model 10, not a 10-2.

As I'm sure you know by now, S&W wee not shipped in S/N order. They were built, placed in the vault, and shipped out as orders received. Whomever placed them in the vault evidently never kept them in any order, and there are many cases of guns being shipped many years after built. The most extreme case I heard Roy comment on was a Model 39 which shipped 13 years after being built.

I list around 5-6 SNs in the neighborhood of yours which shipped from late 1959 to late 1960. The single closest is C4885xx, shipping in 9/60. Based on what I see, I would bet it shipped sometime in 1960. As usual, if you must know precisely, order a letter.

Crazy - C4942XX also shipped 09/60

To illustrate what H. Richard pointed out about them not shipping in serial order, I offer these examples:

C472641, a Model 12, shipped in January, 1964

C488555, a Model 10, shipped in February, 1961

Yours, at C484103, is obviously between those two, yet it went out the door in January, 1960.

Although I'm normally more interested in when a gun was manufactured than when it shipped. this one surprised me! It was within 61 days of my birth date.
