Model 10 parts kit ??

I'm going to buy a S&W Model 10 for a S&W Revolver course I'm gonna be taking - it's a hands-on course, and I've been told that bringing a gun to the class that needs repair is a plus - I've found a "gunsmith special" for $229, but the description clearly states:

"Grips are usually missing. These guns need professional repair and are missing the hammer pin on the frame, and may be missing other small parts, have cylinder binding, be out of time, ringed bore, or other similar issues. Sold as a Gunsmith Special AS-IS, no returns"

So, I'm looking for something like a S&W Model 10 parts kit, rather than buy all the parts for a Model 10 from Numrich or one of those guys - any suggestions about where to get a kit, or even a list of parts that I should get if I can't find a kit? The seller tells me that the guns for sale are either Model 10-9s or Model 10-10s.

It's pressed into the frame. The hammer rotates about it. Not a repair that you'll likely cover in your class. Those right there are really broken pistols, and whoever is selling them is asking way too much . . .

I've seen what you are looking for on Ebay or Gunbroker. It's usually a one off item.

Numerich will list all the parts and with something like a model 10 most of them will be in stock. Most damaged guns don't need everything replaced and therefore most people just buy whatever part they are looking for rather than a whole parts kit.

It sounds the guns you are looking at could almost be considered a "parts kit"...

Welcome to the Forum. I think Muss Muggins has hit the nail on the head on your inquiry. Just curious, but must you have a Model 10 - or will any K-framed S&W revolver work for your class? I think the parts gun you referred to is also very uh, ambitiously priced, and I doubt it would actually do what is required from the class. At that price you should be able to find a used K-frame revolver that needs repair and/or refinishing, and once you've worked on it, should be a safe and working revolver. If you haven't already done so, you should check on-line at the auction sites, or with your local pawn shops and gun stores. You should be able to find suitable candidates there at competitive prices.

Your best bet is a working and fully functional Model 10, 15, 64 or 67. Gunbroker typically has quite a lot of these in varying conditions.

Whatever they will teach and you will learn in the class you take will work absolutely as well if you go in there with a functional K-38 as with a "needs repair" Model 10. A patient buyer can snag a functional K-38 for around $250-$300.

To add if you did not know:
Model 10 = k-frame .38 blued, fixed sights
Model 15 = k-frame .38 blued adjustable sight
Model 64 = k-frame .38 stainless fixed sights
Model 67 = k-frame .38 stainless adjustable sight

Functionally and internally, all four are the same.

texas yankee, which school of gunsmithing are you planning to attend? That specific assignment sounds like one I would like to work through myself... with a twist. I've got a Model 15 that I plan to have rebarreled and rechambered. Maybe I ought to take the course and do it myself!

The gunsmithing course I took last Summer was at Murray State College in Tishomingo, OK - I can't say enough good things about the course I took - $300 for a week-long Summer session class of that quality is an unbelievable deal - and for an additional $50 a day, you can get a private dorm room and three meals in the College Dining Hall - I am looking forward to next Summer - I'll probably take two courses - check it out here - Gunsmithing Technology | Murray State College

I don't HAVE TO have a Model 10, I buddy just suggested that a Model 10 was a solid revolver that'd be good for the class - but since I've already picked up a Model 64 (for $299) in excellent condition, I thought that a Model 10 that needed some work would be good to work on for the class - based on your post, I'll look for a Model 10, 15, 64, or 67. If ya see one on Gunbroker that looks like a good fit for what I'm looking for, I'd really appreciate a heads up.
