Is there a link to that thread somewhere, or did it disappear with the big changeover?

There is a +p discussion going on on another forum I frequent (GON). Someone posted about their recent purchase of a Model 10-5. Another member warned him about shooting +p ammo in it because it would be "more than your "new" gun can possibly withstand." I had to get involved at that point, of course. I need to find a copy of that Model 12 thread. Also, wasn't there a chart that S&W put out a few years back listing what guns were OK for +p? Someone on the other forum came here and quoted the emails someone from here had from S&W stating that no guns before 1996 were rated for +p.

If you can help me find that thread, I would appreciate it. I figure somebody copied it and saved it before the great change took place.

Thanks, Lee. I guess I should have just done a search, but somehow I thought I had read that the post had gone away.

I found just what I needed, particularly Osprey's logs, including the measurements. Also, the post quoting the S&W response to the question of using +p in their revolvers from the March, 1976 American Rifleman is useful.

Osprey's statement that the test did more damage to the shooter than to the gun is interesting. I bought my daughter a 442-2 recently. I have not shot any factory ammo, but my "sort of medianary" reloads in the gun feel pretty stout. I just don't think I would want to fire much +p in it, not for fear of hurting the gun, but myself. I guess I have gotten too old to take the punishment.

I agree, and think the +P is not going to hurt the guns very much if any at all. However I know how my hand feels after shooting +P in my 38-2, 38-3, and 442-2, and Model 12. That's the only reason I don't use it much in the lightweights.

Here are the S&W charts your were asking for...
