Need help pricing a Model 12 shotgun I saw that is for sale. This shotgun is a 12 gauge and is a nickel steel model. Serial # around 590XXX range. This gun looks like it has sat in a safe or cabinet for 80 years. It is that good and all original finish on wood and metal. No alterations of any kind on this one. Also, it has a 32" barrel which are not found that often. What kind of money are we talking here? Thank for the help!

Am I buying or selling? Does it have a rib? What grade? A 12 gauge field with plain barrel 32" full (I assume) choke is worth between $500 and $1000. I would put it closer to the $500. I am a fan of the Model 12 and I am looking for one. They haven't gone up in value like some other guns of that era. The 20 gauge is worth more than the 12.

Just a plain field grade with plain barrel, no rib. They are asking $1200 for it which I felt to be on the high side for one of those guns. Now if it was a tournament, trap, or higher grade then I would be less shocked by the price. I know where I can get a 20 and 16 gauge both for about $1,000 or even less.

Model 12's are really cool guns, but not very practical.
Do you plan on using it?
They do not take kindly to steel shot.

$500 to $1000 sounds right, but if you buy it for $1000 you might not be able to find a buyer at $500.

Edit:
Plain Jane version is more like $500, and you still might have trouble finding a buyer at that price.

I see "lot" of Model 12s for sale being around the clay shooting sports.

The price seems very high and a nice trap Model 12 is generally much less than that, though you really have to examine it in person to make sure of its condition.

32" barrels do bring a premium, but not $1200.

If you want a Model 12, you might check trapshooters.com as there are several there, usually, for sale, ranging from field to trap to engraved.

A late 20's gun (?),,but a lot of money for a plain Field grade even with the 32" bbl.
That 32"bbl may be a negative on a field grade gun price unless it's really something you are looking for,, be it for shooting or collecting purposes.

M12's are like Ithaca 37's. Everybody loves 'em but nobody wants to pay much for them. Keeps the prices down on some great guns.
Nice 12ga Field grades can be bought for $500 w/some looking.

Lots of reworked, refinished, restocked guns around too.
Paying out $1500+ for a Field because it has a 'rare' bbl length and looks original,,,you have to know what you're looking at.

The 32" bbl was offered in Full choke only then.
At the time, Stainless Steel bbls were also offered (Starting in 1926). They were marked as such on the side.
The finish was a blue/black enamel paint or varnish. It wore quickly in use. But an original gun w/little or no handling may still have the finish in tact.
That would be a collectors find...

Just some thoughts

I looked at a 3" mag mod 12 today, 30" full plain barrel that is in excellent condition. asking price was $699.00. don't see many 3" mod 12s around here like I did in Nebraska and Kansas. lee
