All,

A couple of days ago, I received my Model 15-6 frame, sideplate and Cylinder assembly from Chris McVety at Amerigun.

While there, Chris and his artisans transformed my finish-worn Model 15-6 to the modern rendition of the Combat Masterpiece.

Instead of mounting a Tritium front sight, I had him mount a spare SDM 14K gold front sight. I did this to capture the "old school" flavor of the Combat Masterpiece. The gold dot front has the longevity and that classic look. The large size of the dot comes right up to the eye. I happen to use the Massad Ayoob method of having the front sight blade sit a little proud in the rear sight notch. This large gold dot makes this sight picture indeed easy.

Chris also chamfered the charge holes (before bluing). Additionally, I long ago sent the trigger off to Mag-Na-Port for their Combat Trigger modification. I also polished the rebound slide and the corresponding place inside the frame for a deliciously smooth 9 lbs DA pull. I don't change the springs, as I feel it impacts reliability. I wasn't sure of the muzzle chamfer when I got it, but the deep chamfer of the muzzle will protect the rifling and will hopefully enhance accuracy.

The grips were borrowed from my other project gun, the 13-1 that Chris did for me. The fit of the frame lended itself to a snug side-to-side fit of the re-worked Herrett Jordan Troopers that Dee reshaped and checkered (16 LPI). I also borrowed the cylinder release from my Model 22-4 for a traditional look.

Overall, I think my rendition of the classic Combat Masterpiece is a winner. I will take it to the range in the next 1-2 days to sight her in. I will shoot my HD load; the R-P Golden Saber 125gr BJHP +P.

Behold the Combat Masterpiece...

Very nice.
I suspect that the rear sight blade was,or will need to be,replaced by a taller one.

Camster,

The rear blade may in fact need to be replaced. With my POA and proud front sight hold, I'll see. After all, I thought the same with my 67-1 that Chris did for me. It worked perfectly. I'm going to the range tomorrow to see how she shoots.

I'll be sure to post pics of the range visit.

I like everything about except the grips. I'd be replacing those. That 14 karat gold bead front sight is super cool. . .love it!

Would my pair of spare Craig Spegels be better? I have several spare sets of grips. The Troopers fit my hand very well, but in the sunlight have some really nice grain.

I do enjoy Spegels too. Craig makes a good pair of grips. I have them on several of my revolvers.

I like the grips, it's the radical crown I'm not wild about. :D

But anyway you cut it that's a nice gun and it was done the way YOU want it. I think it's great. Good luck with it! :)

I like everything about it. Wish I had something like that.

I thought the Model 15 was perfect the way it came from the factory and that adding target grips was the best you could do to enhance the revolver.

I was so wrong!

All,

As promised, I took her to the range today. Although I had a "bad shooting day", the Combat Masterpiece showed that she can shoot better than her owner.

I shot about 150 rounds through her to dial in the rear sight and to see what the accuracy potential of my #1 HD load (R-P 125gr Golden Saber +P) and #2 HD (Speer 135gr GDHP +P). I had more of the Golden Sabers that I did of the Gold Dots, hence the different sizes of groups fired. My Ayoob-inspired Point of Aim/front sight proud sight picture is pretty much right on. I had to adjust the rear sight about 1 turn up.

I did have 3 FTFs, so I will have to better match the mainspring to the strain screw. I have several spares of each, so I will be working to make it 100% reliable.

The muzzle chamfer while deep, seems to have enhanced the accuracy somewhat. This gun (as with all of my .38/.357 revolvers) really likes the Golden Saber. It by far outshot my pet handloads and the old standby R-P 158gr LSWCHP +P. The GDHP was a close runner-up.

Thanks for the kind words. I may try her with a set of my spare checkered Spegel Extended Boots. The Herrett's were a perfect match of being large enough to grasp, but trim enough to afford good placement of the distal joint on the radiused trigger for fast DA work.

That's great! Your plan came together for you. Your preferred ammunition and sight picture worked out perfectly. I wouldn't change those stocks and give up "shoot-ability" in a home-defense gun as a result. Being compact is no issue there, as it might be with a gun to be carried daily, so why change something you know is working?

BTW, I also agree with you about the Remington ammunition. I always thought it shot rings around the old 158 LSWCHP +P loads, no matter what brand. I also found the old Federal 129-gr Hydra-shok +Ps shot VERY well in all of my guns. I'd prefer a slightly heavier bullet, but those two loads were certainly good shooters. I always wished Winchester had made a .38 Special load like they did for .357 using an appropriately constructed 145-gr Silvertip. I think they made both 110- and 125-gr Silvertip .38s, both of which I thought were "too light" - but maybe it just isn't possible to make a 145 work at .38 Special velocity.. ?
