Model 17-3

Hey everyone;

After a lot of pondering, I finally picked-up a S&W Model 17-3 that I have been eyeing. I think I got it for a fair price ($399). I have not been to the range yet but will get there as soon as I can. The revolver does show a little wear at the tip of the barrel, but to me that is some of the character for buying a used gun. Unfortunately, the gun did not come with the box, but I decided that I wanted the gun more than I wanted the box.

Congratulations on your 17-3. You got a real good deal! They are awesome shooters, but beware, they are ammo specific ( as are all .22's). You need to try as many different brands and styles as possible in it. That's ok though, because it is fun just trying them to see what they like. They have match cut chambers that are on the tight side, so take some cleaning equipment with you to clean the chambers every 100 rounds or so. It makes seating the loaded rounds a lot easier.

Good advice, indeed. I often take something like an clean altoids box with a bunch of Q-tips a few patches damp with CLP or equivalent. That way it is really simple to lightly swab the chambers in the cylinder.

Often a dry Q-tip is enough to clear the way.

Great looking M-17 at a really good price. I have the 4 inch cousin to it in the M-18. You will have a fun time shooting it. As G4F says, the cylinder chambers get tight, some ammo casings expand more than others, so be prepared.

Thanks for the great feedback and response to my new revolver.

I 'had' an old M&P 38spl that I bought in 1970 but later traded for something I thought I wanted more. Really wish I had kept that old 38. That some of the privileges of getting older, remembering some of the guns you had when you were younger that you got rid of to get something you thought that you wanted more that you can't remember what it was that you later got rid of to get something else again. But you always remember the first one that you wish you still had.

Felt kind of like Dirty Harry the other day, I took my miniature .44 (.22lr Model 17) out to the range the other day and asked the target to go ahead and make my day. It shot absolutly great. The trigger and action were very smooth and I shot it so much that my trigger finger was getting tired of the double action shooting.

It took me a long time to work up to getting this revolver, but I am sure glad that I did. It certainly has become a favorite with me.
