My 17-5 has sticky extraction issues, do I need to get a finish reamer ? My 48-4 had a similar problem, I reamed the cylinder with a finish reamer and helped, but not completely fixed the problem.

I would like to hear from actual users their solutions.

Polish, reamer, anything else ?

reamer

lot of threads posted about sticky cases in mdl 17. most recommend finish reamer. use search function for more info on subject than can be digested.

hope that helps a little. krs

I sent my cylinder off to a guy. I think he's a member here. He has better equipment than I can reasonably buy just to do a cylinder or two myself.

Have two K-22's and a .22 combat masterpiece that had terrible extraction issues. Finish reamer took care of them all. Was not hard to do - really went pretty easy with plenty of cutting oil

I own a bunch of S&W rimfires. I picked up a 617-1 last Thurs. Took it to the range and fired 6 rounds, wouldn't extract. Cleaned the already clean chambers and fired 6 more, wouldn't extract.
Left it at the range for their gunsmith to look at, said it probably needs the charging holes reamed based on my prior experience with a 34.

Verdict: The prior owner had dry fired it, and there were tiny ping marks on the mouths of a couple of charging holes ( I had inspected it, but looked for FP marks on the face of the cylinder as I've seen them on other rimfires, not on the edges of the chamfers). He chased the mouths with a reamer, tested it and called it good.
I picked it up ($35) and ran 100 rounds through it without issue. The firing pin hitting the same spot every time was peening the spent cartridges into the small dents from the dryfire and locking the brass into the cylinder.

My 34 would usually give me a couple of cylinders before the cases would stick and I'd need to run a brush through the charging holes, having it reamed to spec solved that issue.

What's amazing about this problem with the rimfire revolvers is that this has been an issue for decades and nothing has been done about it by the Company. It's quite obvious there is an actual chamber size problem because of the amount of material that comes out of these chambers when they are finished reamed.

Seems kind of weird that they would dig their heels in on this one after so many complaints, when the remedy would be so easily accomplished without any extra expense or effect on the accuracy of the gun.

I agree - and truly can't understand why S&W never properly addressed this issue! When I purchased my M18's in the 1980's they were no better. Back then. I sen't them back and Smith reamed them for me. Their answer to me when I asked WHY they made them so tight, was accuracy. I never quite bough that answer because I have many Colts that are just as accurate with no issues inserting and extracting cases. So why have they not addressed this issue - ??????????
