Is there an online source for checking serial numbers of S&W? I came across an 18-3 revolver recently and I am curious as to how old the piece may be.Thanks in advance...

go buy the standard catalog of smith&wesson lots of good info in there. any good book store or internet book sales should have it...

The 18-3 series ran from 1967 - 1977, if you post your serial number someone can help narrow it down. The whole serial number is not required, you and use X's for the last 2 or 3 numbers (123xx) but be sure to include any letters.

Thanks guys. I looked through the FAQs. I tried the search feature. Apparently, every post and response since Moses was a boy has the words "serial number" in it.
The info on page 5 tells me mine was produced in 1969. Which means I'll have to do something special for it's 40th birthday...
