Prior to the recent panic I'd say about 2X too high. Today ? Still probably about $300 to $400 too high. Now if it were a 5 screw pre Model 18 in a gold picture box, not too far out of line.....

Thanks for your help I know nothing about these. Neat looking revolver six shots. I seen 1958 but had no clue, m18 no dash, in the older orginal blue box.

Would this m18/4”/22lr combat masterpiece be the practice revolver. For the Leo who carried the k38 combat masterpiece in 38 special? Cheaper to practice with a 22 lr?

Not it's original intended market nor any large volume sales for LEO purpose as far as I know.

No tools or paperwork?
Do you know if blue is original?
Box #'d to gun on the bottom in black or white grease pencil?
Photos?

Priced way too high is my first reaction, but too many unknowns.

Target Guy makes a good point. I had a friend offer me $1,000 for a 98% model 18 with elk stag grips, no box, docs or tool........................... 10 years ago.
He wanted it.... a collector/accumulator making good money, no kids..... money to burn if he wanted something he bought it .

A long, long time ago I heard / was told, the Smith K22 and K38 were matched up in size and weight for the bullseye group who shot the 2700 match who could then enlist a model 1950/45 or the 1955/45 to round out the gun box. That was back in the late 50's, early 60's in the days before the model 41, 52 and the Colt Gold Cup took over the firing line on the 2700 matches.

I also heard the model 15 (38 combat masterpiece) and the model 18 (22 combat masterpiece) were paired so the .22 could be used as a trainer for the .38, same size, weight, trigger, holster - - -

When I was an LEO back in the early 70's working for a small department we trained new officers and reserve officers who were not shooters with the model 18 then graduated them to the model 10 (issue, or your choice of service revolver should you purchase your own firearm) once they could show proficiency with the .22.

The Model 18 is my favorite S&W revolver. I have two of 'em and highly recommend them. A really nice one might sell for around $1000. Average condition $700-800. However, that $1500 price is way too high.

I also purchased a Model 18-3 on this forum back in 2017. It shipped 11/1974. Paid $995 for it with original box, paperwork and tools. I still think $1500 is too high but they are terrific revolvers. I'm still looking for a K22 CM but I wouldn't pay $1500 for it either (yet, :))

Just the last few weeks it seems that people are asking $1500 for $1000 guns. Granted, if someone pays that, then why not ask for it?
Yes, or at least some guns. This can't be all bad... some people here must be selling at these prices, not just dealers... ;):D

I bought a Model 18 and used it as a practice/understudy to my K models for years. I practically wore it out and recently bought another. i have always thought S&W missed the boat by not doing a 618 without the full lug barrel of the 617 that makes it way too heavy.

I recently bought an 18-3 in excellent condition for $800 at a dealer in PA and thought that was pretty fair. It is a beautiful revolver apparently shot very little.

As far as LEO training with the 18 to complement their 15's goes, I have a 15 and an 18 that were used by the officer in exactly that way. Friend of the family. Sold my father the guns to replace 2 that had been stolen. I know he purchased the 18 on his own and I believe the 15 was purchased, not issued, also.

Deals are still out there, if you get lucky like I did...once.

Bought an 18-3 last year at a local pawn shop for $375 OTD, with the original matching stocks. The guy thought something was seriously wrong with it, hammer did not function correctly. I took a chance. Turns out it was just incredibly dirty. Great shooter in pretty good shape.
