I have a Model 18-2 shipped 1962 and have a question about the grips. Per the pics they are not numbered to the gun but , are marked I have another set like them but just have a K scratched inside the grips. It is a full target annd wondering if the grips anre original to the gun. Also included pics of my Model 18 no dash and Pre Model 18 with a Kings hammer ext.

The ink stamp on the inside of the right panel (KT WAL) suggests these came from the replacement blister pack offerings.

The standard stocks for a Model 18-2 .22 Combat Masterpiece were Magna. Targets could be ordered, but most often were not. A letter would probably indicate that it didn't ship with targets, but it would tell you if it did.

BTW KT WAL means K frame target stocks made of walnut.

Last century when I traded into mine with a friend. Used. It had been sent back to S&W and was nickeled It came with with smooth S&W Rosewood grips. I later installed RR & WO. Ranger trigger and target hammer.
Story of how I got it......We were rabbit hunting with beagles. In addition to my shotgun I was wearing a Colt LW 45acp Commander. My friend was wearing his nickel 18. During a pause in the hunt. I told him. "I'll trade my Colt for your 18". After thinking a bit he said OK...SO....We unbuckled our holsters w/guns and swapped.....Continuing on with the hunt.
Pre 18 CM on the left......18 on the right

Great reminder, Jack. Sometimes, it's the little things like that, that escape my memory when trying to just figure out what the gun is.

Here's my 18-2 that apparently shipped with the same football cutout target stocks. There are no markings on the inside of the stocks, but the box is marked with "TS" in the stock position. As you can see it also has the TT, TH, and trigger stop. It is my favorite S&W. It has gone along on every range trip since I got it.

I've got no idea what the box marked "ins" with what appears to be either a V or check mark, or the "PKR" with a number 3 mean. Anyone?

Edited to add: "INS" = Inspected with a check mark?

Iowa - very nice model 18 and a great story. My 18 is a -3 that also came with TT/TH/RR correct per the box. Should have had service stocks but came to me with combats. Wearing walnut now.

My guess would be "INSPECTOR" and "PACKAGER".

Thanks for the info, the 18-3 is TT,TH TS. The pre 18 and 18-0 are not with correct numbered stocks.

Can you please share a few more photos of that King hammer extender...:D Does it say "King" on the extender? Do you know anything of the history of the extender? How is it attached (is it held on by screws, like a trigger shoe)? I have lots of King modified guns, King literature, King Cockeyed Hammers, but I do not recall seeing a King extender like that - cool...very cool.

Also - that is a very nice looking proud pin .22 Combat Masterpiece.

Thank you,

There’s just something right about a S&W K frame 22, whether the
barrel is 4”, 6”, or 8 3/8”, they’re all designed to be wonderful! :D
