Looking @ a 19-4 with the moon cut. My question is do you have to use clips with this setup or will the outer edge of the cylinder have enough lip to use w/o clips? Where would I find moon or half moon clips in 38?

Has it been cut for moon clips or is it just a recessed cylinder?

The best source for Full Moon clips for a K frame conversion would be TK. They are .025 thick. 10/$60
Welcome to TK Custom.com & Moonclips.com

The TK .025 moon clips do not work with Winchester or Starline brass. I would sort out Remington, Peters, UMC, and Federal to try.

The issue is that the undercut at the rim is not the same size brand to brand on 38 Special brass.

Your cylinder could be cut two ways. If you have an outside raised ring on the back of the cylinder, it will work with loose ammo, and also Speedloaders. Look at the cylinder above. See the raised circle, and the raised area that dips in between chambers? Picture about 2/3 of that area betweem chambers machined off. On my 686 the ring dipped in just a little at that area. That should give you an idea what to look for.

With no outer raised ring is will have to use moonclips for all loading. Normally they are cut to use loose rounds if a profeshinal did the conversion.

Clark did my 686 years ago.

You might want to get a loading tool from TK for the K frame moon clips. It will help keep you from bending the .025 (Thin) clips.

If you would like a Moon Clip Carrier, North Mountain makes one for a 38.

As per your pic, it looks like that cylinder. What purpose in the recessed cylinder, is it a function thing or what. I take it that this cylinder does not require or use moon clips. The gun is used, looking at it as an intro comp shooting tool. Also have my eye on a 586 nickle plated for same use. Not a safe queen, will be used as an all-around gun. Not going to be a serious competitor, just want to have some fun. 38 is inexpensive enough and have a friend that reloads that will teach me how and let me use his setup when he's not busy.

The cylinders (on Magnum and rimfire revolvers) were recessed that way to give more support to the base of the cartridge, when better, stronger brass shells were developed there was no further need for the recessed cylinder, at least with Magnum chambered revolvers.

You take it correctly, you do not need, nor does your 19-2 require moon clips.
