I have a Model 19-4 blued with a pinned barrel, a 4" barrel and is a three screw. The gun has a stainless or nickel cylinder. The top of the yoke has a detent ball, and there is a corresponding dent in the frame for the detent ball. Were Model-19s ever manufactured with stainless or nickel cylinder? Would a letter specify if it was manufactured with a stainless/nickel cylinder if I were to request one?

Michigan State Police used to have snub nose 38s with stainless cylinders I know, but never heard of a Model 19 having one.

The first revolvers to leave S&W with ball detent locks were Performance Center revolvers. Dash 4 production ended before the Performance Center opened so you have a customized revolver. Given that it is very unlikely that its other unusual features are original.

Nickel and stainless steel are not the same color but the thin hard chrome finishes most famously applied by Armoly are very close to the color of the stainless steel S&W uses. Armoly was a popular after market finish during the dash 4's time so it's another possibility.
