I've been looking for a 357 carry revolver for the farm. I wanted something a little heavier than a J-frame, with shorter barrel than my 4" 586. Ideally, I wanted a SS model, but I came across a 19-4 today that might fit the bill. It is not SS...some PO parkerized it. Everything feels good & tight, but the finish is pretty rough. Not sure when it was made(haven't seen the SN yet), but it has a 3" pinned barrel, synthetic grips, round butt.

It appears to be a good fit for rough service at the farm, but I'm not that familiar with the K frames or pinned barrels. So, is anything I've described(other than finish)a reason to pass it up? I think I can get him down to $350 out the door.

The model 19 is a K frame. If it has a 3 inch barrel, it is fairly rare. The standard was 2 1/2 inch. The Parkerized finish knocks the collector value off. I think $350 for a good model 19 shooter is a pretty good deal nowadays. The 3 inch barrel is neat because the ejector rod is longer which makes ejection more positive. Not that the 2 1/2 inch doesn't work, just the 3 inch is just a little more positive. The longer sight radius is nice also while the 3 inch is still short enough to pack easy. All in all, i think that based on your description, it sounds like a pretty fair deal.

If you're looking for something smaller than your 586, presumably your 586 is a 4" and the 19 is a 2.5"?

For carry around the farm, parkerized is preferred to blued, but you'll still want to wipe it down at the end of the day with a little oil.

If the 19 is in correct mechanical condition, $350 is a superb price, even for a knockabout shooter.

Here's a link for assessing revolver condition that will help you decide if this is a worthwhile purchase:
