just saw this model 19 for sale locally. the add says it binds with magnums and will need a new bushing. what does that entail? i'm not really a 6 inch barrel fan but its only $200.

It is probably the hammer nose (firing pin) bushing they are referring to. It needs to go back to S&W for replacement since they have the staking tool needed. Including shipping both ways about a $125-150 job.

heh...I saw the same thing, wondered the same thing, and posted in the gunsmithing section.

It's hard to tell from that one picture what sort of shape that gun is in...and the ad says something about initials "on it". It's just far enough from me, that I'm unlikely to go see it.

The hammer nose bushings are a recently discontinued product, but may be found here and there.

Could the reference to a "bushing" mean something in some other area?

Check it out thoroughly before grabbing it up.

If the hammer nose bushing were "getting loose", how would that only cause cylinder lock-up with magnum loads?

Never mind...looking at another "board suggested" thread, I now understand what the hammer nose bushing is. I was thinking it was what held the firing pin on the hammer...but I see now it's a part that fits into the frame right behind the firing cylinder. Is that a removable/replaceable part because it's expected to be a wear item? I mean why not just have the breach face be solid frame?

I guess for this 19, the seller is saying that the recoil of magnum loads can make this bushing start to back out of it's place, causing cylinder lockup.

I have seen revolvers in which the bushing has become wallowed out, thus allowing primers to flow back into it, locking up the gun.
A few very early 686 and 681 models had a similar problem with a very hot police load, leading to a general recall for modification of these models.
