I snagged a nice Smith Model 1917 today. The SN#177898 is on bottom of grip frame, barrel, ejector and cylinder. Barrel marked S.&W. D.A. 45. Small logo on left side frame. The S34 inspector stamp is on barrel, S2 on yoke. The grips are checkered diamond, no medallion and the right grip is penciled to match. There is a lanyard loop present and there is no indication that this was ever a U.S. marked revolver. The finish shows some wear where it had contact with the hand..but there is no pitting or indication of rough use. I would like to have a better idea of the BOD. I could not pass it up for $350 OTD. Will post pics later.

My commercial 1917, SN 1806xx, shipped in January 1936. It must have been stuck in the safe for a while.

Just to add another data point closer to the OP's s/n 177898, commercial 1917 s/n 179014 shipped in January 1927.

Muley Gil, yours - like good whiskey - simply needed to age roughly 8 years to reach perfection before shipping. :)

I really appreciate the feedback on the serial number range. I found one example that was from 1926 and the one I posted about was a bit earlier in range. Rick, I did post one pic but you will see this one in person in the near future.
