I recently saw a 6" 2206 which appeared to be different from the standard 2206 with adjustable sights and wood grips. This one was marked Model 2206 Target and had Millet sights, which is mentioned in SCSW. However, it also had contoured, almost finger grooved wood grips, and the cutout on the side of the frame above the barrel was different. It was advertised as "Model 2206 Match Target" with a "heavy match grade barrel". I later saw an identical gun for sale that was advertised simply as a 2206 Target. I dismissed the description as overblown, made-up hype, but these two did look different than any 2206 I've ever owned or seen. Anybody else ever seen one or have any information about them?

PM I think I can explain.

The 422 came first and then the 622. Both were alloy frame and available in 4 and 6 inch versions. Both models were available with adjustable rear sights and fixed sight versions for both barrel lengths.

Then they began making the 2206 all stainless version, also in 4 or 6 inch and also with adjustable or fixed sights. All these equiped with the adjustable sights were refered to as "target" versions, but there was no designation as to model number until the 2206 TGT was introduced.

The TGT had a Millet series 100 adjustable sight that fits in a dovetail groove in the frame as opposed to the factory adjustable sight that is screwed into a channel groove machined lengthwise into the slide. The TGT also had contoured walnut grips from Herrit, and the different machining above the barrel as well as being drilled and tapped in the top of the frame for optics. I have seen in the product introduction flyer that the barrels were specially chosen by S&W techs for higher quality, but that was a pretty vague description. I do not believe that it is a heavier or bull barrel. I hope to have my hands on one soon to compare.

So to recap, the factory adjustable sight versions were refered to as "target" models until the 2206 TGT was introduced as a true target pistol.

Does that make sense?

Yep, I'm very familiar with the 422, 622, and 2206 in both barrel lengths and sight options, also the compact 2213 and 2214. (The fixed sight 4.5" 2206 makes a great training/practice gun for the S&W 3rd Generation centerfire pistols). What threw me was the different cutout on the 2206 Target that I saw. SCSW talks about the Target model and the Millet sights, but no mention is made of any other differences. If you're getting one be sure to post pictures.

I've never seen an explaination for the different machining on the frame of the 2206 tgt. It may have been just to visually differenciate the TGT from the standard 2206.

Many pictures of the 2206 tgt here :
