Model 25-9... Any good?

I am being offered a trade for one of my guns. He is offering a 25-9 with a 6 inch barrel. The gun is blued and he says it is in excellent condition. It is chambered for 45 Colt.

Anyone have opinions on these guns? What about the .45 Colt as an all-around pig killer and hunting backup?

I know this may sound sacriligeous, but if I wanted to cut the barrel down to 3-4 inches, would that be doable?

The 25-9 is an updated 25-5, has the endurance upgrades, and is a fine gun. I wouldn't cut the barrel down though. Instead, I would look for a different gun. They didn't make all that many of these guns with the upgrades.

I am a huge fan of the .45 Colt. It will make a great hog gun. Short barrels are for defense, and trail guns. If you plan on hunting hogs with it, leave it as is. You'll be able to more accurately place your shots, and you'll gain some useful velocity over a snubbie.

Sir, I bought this one new in 1990. Lots of other guns have come and gone since then, but this one's a keeper. BTW, its chamber throats are properly sized for 0.452" bullets, which many of the earlier ones were not.

The 25-9 and, my favorite, the 25-7 are the best of the blued pre-MIM S&Ws in .45 Colt. If you want a shorter barrel send it to Smith. They should have a 4" Mtn. Gun tube on hand at the very least.
