I have a Smith and Wesson model 27/3 with a 6 inch barrel. I bought the gun new in 1989 and it's mint. Is this a less desirable model then the earlier ones ? It is a nice piece no barrel pin and the cylinders are not recessed. It's not for sale but I thought I would ask. Thanks.

For collecting = less desirable.
For shooting = it will do just fine.

The true diehard S&W guys will always prefer the pinned and recessed guns. To me, those features aren't worth a lot IF the barrel on a non-P&R gun I want to buy is on straight.

It's still a really, really nice S&W, when they were still making very nice revolvers.

It isn't as valuable or collectible as a pinned and recessed revolver, but compared to what S&W is making now, it is still a very desirable revolver, that was built the way S&W used to make them, and thus, much nicer than the current production revolvers.

Keep it, shoot it, take good care of it, and pass it to one of your children. Nobody makes revolvers like yours, anymore.

Actually, I've always liked the -3's for a heavy shooter gun as a little crud buildup on the back of the cylinder will not cause the same problems as accumulated dirt in the cylinder recesses.

Thanks for the replies. I have enjoyed that gun over the years. As a long term reloader and bullet caster I plan on shooting it a little more this year. I do intent to pass it down through the family. Mike
