I have a 28-2 with a bad cylinder, the factory only has ''new style'' replacements without counterbored cylinders the new style rachet and sans the collar on the front. The man I spoke to said there was no problem making the change [about 60 bucks plus the cylinder]. I'm wondering if I can save the shipping costs and have a local guy do the work. What do you think?

The ratchet on the extractor has to be cut and the factory has a special machine that makes it easy and fast. Any other smith will have to do it by hand and it is a slow, painstaking job. Unless he is giving his labor away, he will likely charge more than $60 to do it. If he screws up one cut, the ratchet is ruined and a new one will have to secured. Let the factory do it.

If you can locate a good used cylinder, the factory will install it. Vito in the Performance Center did one on an "S" prefix M29-2 for me not too long ago. Then you will have a gun with all parts appropriate to the serial & model number.

Why do you need to replace the cylinder on your 28-2. I have a cylinder for a 28 with recessed chambers that has a fitted extractor, collar on the front of the cylinder, and the extractor rod. it only needs the centering pin extractor spring and center pin spring. I bought this to rechamber to .356 gnr, but haven't yet. I installed it on my model 28-2 to check, and it timed well with no problems, maybe just luck. Anyway if your cylinder is rechamberable maybe we could work a deal.

I would send it to the factory (have your FFL do it for 25 or less) and have they give the old girl a total fitness job :D. Then when you get her back she will look like new if you get a blue job to.
