Perhaps inspired by the writings of Elmer Keith who said the 4 1/2-inch barrel was ideal, this 44 Magnum was shipped on July 25, 1963 with a factory 4 1/2-inch barrel and smooth stocks. It is the only one known with this barrel length.

Looking at that revolver strictly from an engineering and design standpoint, it's virtually impossible not to love it. It's a classic example of form and function coming together to make a perfect mechanism. And the fact that it's the only one of its kind? Looking at the photograph, the viewer's brain automatically goes into that "what-I-wouldn't-give-to-own..." mode.

Beautiful gun and photographed beautifully.

Wow Bill, that one is great! You have many prettier .44 Magnums but this one is probably one of the neatest in my opinion. :)

The trigger is feathered on the sides, but not smooth.

SP: I have no idea who ordered it as it was shipped to a gun shop in Texas.

The Performance Center of S&W may do special orders, but I have not made any inquiries, so I don't know if they will do work like this any longer.

Beautiful. I love the grips. Great find.

Man we gotta know your secret to finding all of these awesome guns. Pull a Santa and hit every yard sale in America in one day? Or is there rewards in taking old widows groceries? Or are you just plain old very good at finding the jewels?

Whatever method is used please please keep it up. I for one appreciate seeing your wonderful finds with pictures.

Where in Tx? Is the gun shop still open?

4.5", had to be a gunny guy who read or perhaps knew Elmer. Most would go 4" or 5".

I've wondered about the history on many of my older guns.

It is like a cold case.

Now I'm intrigued.

Who,
what, 29-2 S&W in 4.5".
why,
where, Texas.
when 1963
and How was it used?

Bill you have always had an eye for the beautiful and exotic and a willingness to share which I truly appreciate. I still have at hand the stack of photos of engraved S&W's you sent me many moons ago.
Thanks

It's not quite the same thing but when I look at that revolver I am reminded of the time I took my first revolver out of the closet to show my mother. It was sometime in 1980, and the gun was a very new 4" barreled Model 19. I had no idea what she was going to say because I presumed she didn't share my love of firearms (although we never really discussed it). Mom looked at it and to my everlasting joy she said, "That's a beautiful gun."

And that's the name of that tune!!!!!

"That's a beautiful gun."

I remember reading Elmer's comments about the 4.5" tube and thinking how VERY different was his world! I was a kid who wished I could get any good S&W in the 1970s when most any revolver one could want was completely unavailable at the time. The idea of actually getting one "made to order" seemed impossible unless it was for someone very special and important.
Elmer Keith, perhaps?

Bill, don't you also have a one of a kind, or at least very rare 5.5" gun as well? Maybe you could post that one too if you still have it. The oddball sizes are really nice to see.

Both of my parents are gone. I'm offically eligible for adoption. I know how to mow the lawn, take out the garbage and walk the dog. Pictures sent on request.

Too late, he has already adopted me! :D

Doc, I can't really add to what's already been said.. Just wow! What a piece! :)
