Model 29 No Dash Question

I recently purchased a M 29 no dash 4 screw with a 8 3/8" barrel. When I look up the serial # (286xxx) it reads a 1966 or so year, does that sound correct?

Sorry, after closer inspection (Magnifying glass) what I thought was
S-286XXX was actually S-206xxx. But I did see a X stamped on the yoke and a X stamped on the frame. Is that a inspection mark?

According to the Standard Catalog of S&W.
Your serial number puts your firearm in 1959-1960
production year. Hope this helps.

I have a Model 29 in the same serial number range that was shipped in November 1960. The X you refer to is a fitter's or inspector's mark and has no significance to a collector.

Hello, I asked about the X because I was kind of suspect of the gun possibly being reblued. I know sometimes they mark them if they have. It has a light spot on the S&W emblem. Let me know what you think.

The 29 does not look reblued to me. The normal refinishing marks stamped on the grip frame by the factory are R-Bi, R-S (each inside a rectangle), or a B followed by a diamond. There is usually a date stamped on the frame also (i.e. 9 62 would indicate a refinish in September 1962).

The stamping of an X or other letter on the yoke and grip frame was a common practice and does not indicate a reblue or other type of repair or modification.

Rollmarking of the S&W logo on the side plate of Model 29s in the 50s and 60s was often light and can lead one to conclude the revolver was refinished.
