I am looking to buy this 4" model 29 (29-2) from a friend.
The gun is in very good shape overall but has a pro blem with the hand.
The hand is loose and you can hear it moving when you shake the gun.
The gun would only index (turn cylinder when trigger is pulled or hammer is pulled back) when you point it down. If you point it up it will not index.

Now, I tried to remove the sideplate to see what is wrong with the hand but the back most screw (the one behind the grip) is stucked in. The other two screws came out fine but this one just won't budge. I am trying my best to avoid messing up the screw by pushing down hard while turning. I soak the area with PB blaster for a few hours but still no movement.

Any advice or tips to get this screw out.

Thanks

I had the same problem on a model 10 a few years back. I heated the metal with a heat gun screw came out like nothing no damage to the bluing the screw head got a bit ------ I called S&W and they sent one --free--.

The usual methods for breaking a screw loose are:

1. penetrating oil - let it soak for several hours or days.

2. mechanical shock - with properly fittin screwdriver in slot, use a light hammer to tap on the screwhead. This is often enough to break it loose.

3. heat - apply local heat with a soldering iron (copper) and turn screw while head is hot.

+1 Tap the screwdriver with a light hammer while twisting on the screwdriver. Rest the gun on a block of wood or similar so it's well supported.

Use a gunsmith type screwdriver and not a hardware store screwdriver. Your hand is not behind the spring in the trigger. Was the revolver dropped?

I dont think it has been dropped as I could not see any mark that would indicate so.

I tried heating with soldering iron but still no movement.
I'll let more penetrating oil set on it.

Success....Patience worked :)
Got the sideplate screw out and fixed the hand.
The spring on the trigger that pushes the hand forward got loose.
