I have always wanted an N frame 45 colt revolver. I have lately been considering converting another model to 45 colt. I know some guys have changed cylinders and barrels on model 28s to achieve this.
I was wondering if the cylinder and barrel on a model 29 or 629 could be re-bored to 45 colt dimensions?
How would this compare cost wise to replacing barrel and cylinder on a 28?

Thanks,
Kevin

Having had a couple of revolvers rechambered over the years, it's almost always cheaper to buy one that is already chambered in the cartridge that you desire.

You can buy the M25-5 or a M25 Mountain Gun in .45 Colt cheaper than having a M28 converted.

How about selling the Model 29 and then go buy something in .45 Colt??

I wanted a tight chambered, tight lock-up, dead nutz spot on 5" 45 Colt N-Frame with a few other tweaks so I sent a M29 and an 8 3/8" 45 Colt barrel to Jim Stroh. I got back exactly what I wanted. Yes it cost more than buying a 25-5 but I got exactly what I was after.

Model 25

I once bought a Model 25 4" on this forum from a member who got it from Hamilton Bowen.
It was a Model 25 4" that he had put a Model 29 cylinder in that he had line bored creating a perfect throated 45 Colt with recessed cylinders, and yes it was a pinned Model.I put Kurac's grips on it and it also had a lanyard ring.
So, a p&R 45 Colt, something Smith had never made.
I sold it to another member here.

Dave,

Beautiful guns!! A am always impressed with the guns you post.
I gathered from some of your other posts that you do this work yourself? Are you in the business?

I have a pre 27 similar to your second picture. Never even thought of having it modified. Hmmm, now you have me thinking.

Do you bore the barrels and cylinders, or replace them with the appropriate ones?

Kevin

Kevin,

Years ago I used Trapper in MI to bore and rifle existing barrels.

Here of late I've been using Delta Gun & Clearwater Re-Boring for that service.
They've cut some fine barrels for me. Dead nutz every time.

Well, I some times use the original barrels & cylinders (that have been re-bored ) other times,
I use extra cylinders or barrels I have purchased here abouts.

On the nickeled per-27 (pictured in my post above), that I doll'd up as my .45 LC carry revolver,
I used a model 29 cylinder for the extra length. for those long nosed SWC cast bullets.

By reaming the cylinders, I can control the critical dimensions to my liking.
Setting the C/B gap, head space and barrel throat lead-in to suit.

Sorry, I don't have much time to spend in the toolroom now. But maybe next year.

Please feel free to PM or email me, always glad to try and help.

Su Amigo,
Dave
