Hi Folks, I inherited this gun from my Dads' Uncle. He carried it on a Sun Oil ship, He was the Captain. I got pics. and numbers. I guess the pics wont' load. The # on the heel, barrel, cylinder, in grips is 696853. When you open cylinder the # on the frame is 29 72 1 On the flip out side the # is 29988 I think. Its' not very clear on the last two #'s. Would like to know the age and any details if available. Thanks for any input. Ira D.

If it's model 29, it will have a serial number beginning with an S or an N in front of it. That serial number will be on the bottom of the grip frame.
You may be reading assembly numbers.

Thanks for response moosedog. Maybe its' not a 29, it is 38 s&w ctg, and a 6'' barrel, fixed sights, it has a strap loop on the bottom of the grip, no letters in any #. I will work on pics. Thanks again. Ira D

On the very, very scant info provided I will make a wild guess.

If it is actually in 38 S&W caliber (not 38 Special) and actually has a 6" barrel my first instinct is to say it's a Lend Lease gun made for Great Britain during the great misunderstanding of 1939-45.

The 696853 number sounds like the serial and I think would place it from the beginning of WW II. Most of the guns sent to GB were 5" models but they took whatever S&W could provide so some 6" and 4" guns were also sent. There is some collector value if the gun is in very good condition.

Definitely NOT a Model 29 as that's a 44 Magnum.

Maybe someone more knowledgeable will come along with better info.

Not being a serious collector I keep it simple. Either it's a VM (with a V prefix) or it's a LL gun (no V prefix). I can't keep all the various nuances of dates and terminology straight.
